Tell us first little about the band:
We are Dichotic, and we hail from Halifax, Nova Scotia in
Canada. The band has been around since the early 1990s in one form or another, we settled
on the name "Dichotic" in June 1998, and that's how it's been ever since.
1.Who are the band members:
Raland Kinley - vocals
Richard Guy - guitar
Jeff Calder - guitar
Scott Armstrong - bass
Neil Grandy - drums
2.How did you got the name:
Richard discovered the word "dichotic" in a volumes dictionary he has. We like
the name because it is not a common word, and nobody else appears to have ever
incorporated it in a band name.
3.What is the music stile that you
playing and compare it to some similar groups:
Dichotic plays death metal, but not the straight-forward, "been there done
that", style. You can compare some of what we do, to bands like Crytopsy and
Suffocation. But we're not too much like either of them.
Our new stuff is even less like anything out there. Hectic, fusion, grind, death rock.
4.Some of your favorite groups:
Meshuggah, Suffocation, Cryptopsy, Rush, Cocteau Twins, Kreator, Yes...
5.Your biggest success:
Our biggest moment so far has been the fact that we have a CD to call our own, and we are
looking to record another one this year. Nova Scotia isn't a mecca for death metal, but
we're making a name for ourselves on the Web and at the shows we play.
6.Best concert that you played on:
Valleypalooza (a big outdoor festival held each summer in Nova Scotia) was pretty good.
All of our all-ages shows at a local venue called the Pavilion have gone pretty well too.
7.Your opinion about commercial music:
Commercialization in music? Music made for the sake of profit-taking is never good. The
fact that people buy it is even worse. I don't mind it if a band has some commercial
success, but it has to be
accomplished without the band drastically altering its sound, for me to continue to
support them. The progress has to be natural, and for artistic reason, not fiscal.
8.Plans for the future:
We plan to record another CD late this year, continue to play shows (hopefully getting to
Montreal this year), and promote ourselves as best we can on the Web.
9.Your opinion about metal underground
scene in you country:
The entire underground metal scene in Canada is pretty much focused in Quebec, especially
Montreal. The people there really get into it. Everywhere else, you can find pockets of
people who support metal, but it's nothing spectacular.
10.Your message to people here who
listen metal and core:
Be yourself and don't change your music for anyone but yourself. Support your local scene
and independent metal bands around the world. Most of the best music comes from
independent artists.
