MEDEA II

Setting: The house of Medea's daughter Myrena, in the Land of Ev.

Myrena: Many centuries have passed since my mother, the infamous Medea, murdered my two half-brothers. Of course, back then, I did not know who my mother was, but I eventually found out, with the help of the fairies. I vowed not to be like my evil mother, and to use my mystical powers only for the good of myself and others, rather than for the poisoning of Princesses. All the same, I would like to meet her someday.

Demon King: I know of a spell that can bring her here. Are you prepared to receive her now?

Myrena: I might as well. Cast the spell now, Your Majesty.

(The Demon King chants a few words, and Medea appears in the room.)

Medea: Where am I? Who are you? How did I get here?

Myrena: I am your daughter, Myrena.

Medea: Daughter? I have no daughter.

Myrena: Yes, you do. I was born before your affair with Jason.

Medea: I did have a daughter once, but she disappeared. A changeling was left in her place.

Myrena: Well, considering the way you treated my half-brothers, I'm glad you lost me.

(Enter Jason.)

Medea: I loved my two sons! It was to spite their lying father that I killed them.

Jason: After all these years, must you still call me a liar?

Medea: Oh, it's you! My unfaithful husband.

Jason: I was not, legally, your husband.

Medea: Yes, and because of that, you attempted to marry that Princess. And this was when we were engaged.

Myrena: Would you two stop this foolish argument?

Jason: Who are you, maiden?

Myrena: I am Medea's daughter, born before you met her. I was kidnapped by fairies, and raised by peasants.

Jason: You were better off with the peasants than you would have been with this witch.

Medea: Or than you would have been with this liar.

Myrena: Mother, I did not ask the Demon King to summon you here in order to hear your gripes and insults.

Medea (to Demon King): So, you're the one who called us here?

Demon King: I called you here, Medea. I don't know how Jason got here. My spell didn't summon him.

Jason: I don't know, either. Just a minute ago, I was dead.

Myrena: Well, since you are here, why don't you try to resolve your problems, and not argue about things that happened over a millennium ago.

Jason: But she murdered my sons!

Medea: He was unfaithful to me!

Myrena: You've each repeated those lines about a thousand times. I realize that murder is a terrible crime, but your children would have been dead by now anyway.

Jason: She should have been killed for her crime!

Myrena: Would that have brought back your sons?

Jason: No, but they would have been avenged!

Myrena: And you, mother, keep saying that Jason lied to you. However, conditions do change, and sometimes promises cannot be fully kept.

Medea: But I made so many sacrifices for him!

Jason: Yes, you killed more people. You are a barbarian!

Myrena: You two are certainly stubborn!

Medea: I did everything for love.

Jason: You don't know the meaning of the word, witch!

Medea: And you do? Your love changed every week!

Myrena (quietly, to Demon King): Is there anything we can do about these two? It seems that they'll never resolve this quarrel, and I don't like quarreling in my house.

Demon King: I can erase their memories. Unfortunately, this will not change their natures.

Myrena: Do it anyway. They can probably be reformed.

Demon King: Very well, I shall.

(The Demon King chants another spell.)

Jason: Where am I? Who am I?

Myrena: Your name is Jason.

Medea: And who am I?

Myrena: You are my mother.

(Medea and Myrena embrace.)

Chorus: After being trained in life by Myrena, Jason and Medea were married, and they now live happily together. They remember none of their past, and, although they have heard the story of Jason and Medea, they consider it to be a mere myth.
