Chapter Three

“Can I use the phone?” Angela asked one of the nurses at the service desk.

“What for?” Nick asked behind her.

“I need a ride home.” She said reminding him that she doesn’t have a car.

“I can give you a ride, or Kevin can give you a ride, I’m sure he will if I call him.” He suggested eagerly as he pulled out his cell phone.

“Nah, I’ll just call my sister.” Angela told him as she walked off to find a pay phone. She found one around the corner, because none of those nurses would answer her question or even bother looking up. She put in 35cents and waited, the phone rang but it was the answering machine. Angela tried DeaAnne’s cell phone, but it wasn’t turned on. She finally hang up the phone in despair.

Her knees started to buckle, she sat down slowly and curl herself into a ball. Tears flooded her eyes, the hurt of Travis leaving her took total control of her. She covered her mouth as she let out an angry cry since she didn’t want any pity. Angela felt a hand tapped on her shoulder and looked up, and it was Nick.

“I called Kevin anyway, since I need a ride too,” He started but stopped when he saw her red eyes and unstoppable tears. “What happened?”

“Travis left me...” Angela answered in a voice slightly above whisper.

Their eyes meet again, but this time she saw a bunch of mixed emotions in his eyes, but there was no pity. He slowly sat down next to her, and put his arms around her waist.

“It’s all right” He whispered and kissed her forehead, all of her pride about being a strong girl and her defenses broke down when she heard his smooth voice and felt the softness of his lips on her forehead, she rested her head on his chest. Listening to his heart beat, her sobs stopped.

They stayed like that for a long period of time, if Kevin didn’t came to the hospital to get Nick, they might stay like that forever.

“Let’s go.” Kevin commanded, the two of them followed him without protest.

Neither one of them said anything in the car, at least not until they could see the front yard of Angela’s house.

“Bye. And thanks for the ride.” She said, without looking at Nick, because she knew if I took one look at him, she won’t be able to get out the car.

Nick opened his mouth as if he’s trying to say something. But before he could put his thoughts into words, a young woman came out the door. She was tall and athletic, with beautiful long blonde hair that’s put up in a ponytail.

“Angela? Where were you? I was worried sick!” Of course, without a doubt, that was Angela’s older sister, DeaAnne.

“Sorry, I got in a little accident.”

“What? Are you okay?” DeaAnne’s anger fade and was placed with concern.

“Yes, she’s fine, just a bruise on her shoulder.” Kevin answered, sticking his head out from the passenger side’s window. He sounded annoyed.

“Are you the driver that hit her?” DeaAnne asked accusingly.

“No, it was my friend AJ, but she shouldn’t be wondering in the street in the first place. Maybe she was on something.” Kevin fought back, he had been in a very bad mood lately, he long time girl friend Carrie left him because he didn’t spend enough time with her, he pulled a muscle while trying to do a dance move and AJ got in a accident.

“How dare you say such thing like that? You think because you’re Mr. Pop Start and that gives you an advantage to assume things without thinking? I admit that maybe my sister shouldn’t be walking on the street, but haven’t your friend ever heard of something called ‘slowing down’ or is he too stupid to understand that?”

“He understands that just fine...”

But he was cut off by DeaAnne, “and my sister does not, I repeat, does not do drugs. She didn’t do drugs, she doesn’t do drugs and she will not do drugs!” Her blue eyes were burning with anger, if look can kill people, Kevin would be dead by now.

“Stop! I’m getting a headache.” Angela yelled out, and Nick agreed. “Now, do you want to come in and have some coffee or something?” That question was for Nick.

“Sure, and I’m sure Kevin would like some too.” Nick replied.

“He’s not welcomed.” DeaAnne blurt out, but she let out a sigh when she saw the look on her little sister’s face. “Please come in.”

“That’s a lot better. Kevin and Nick, this is my sister DeaAnne, and DeaAnne, Kevin and Nick.” Angela introduced them then started walking towards the house, Nick followed her.
