The remarkable thing about Southwest Research and Education Service, Inc.(SRES) is that all of its funds go directly into programs and services. SRES has never paid staff or anyone for time spent as board members or workers. It is a charitable organization in the purest meaning of the word.
Founded in 1986, SRES was given 501(C)(3)170(A)status as a not for profit corporation. The board made the corporation available to community families and groups working to improve education. For more than five years SRES was the organization of record for the Pinon Arts and Humanities Alliance, funded by the Colorado Arts and Humanities Council. SRES also worked with famillies to improve education via pre-schools and programs in the public schools. The Citizens For Quality Education in Montezuma County Colorado worked as a division of SRES. Other programs included grant writing, design and implementation of charter schools in both Colorado and Arizona.
SRES PRESS was established to provide resources for educators, workshops for administrators and teachers, and counseling/consulting services. A division of SRES, The College of Professional Educators was created in 1992. Programs have been delivered as far away as Alaska, and Long Island.
In 1995, the Board of Education of Southwest Research and Education Services (SRES) decided to focus their energy upon the development of programs that support family learning experiences. Using the resources of the expanding homeschooling networks, SRES focused on travel and "travelschooling." A Request For Proposals (RFP) from families who wished to research and develop model programs was sent out in 1996. Families who responded were required to keep records of all facets of their programs. SRES members provided technical assistance and support as needed. Through this Webpage you can connect with participating families and/or get information that will help you plan your travel-learning experiences.
