The draft is predicated on the size of your league and the amount of positions in your starting lineup.   If you have not done this yet, please click the link to Setting up a League.

The standard draft scenario has Team 1 with the first pick in the draft.  The highest team number has the last pick in the first round.  The picks are reversed in the second round.  For example, Team 12 has the first pick in the second round and Team 1 has the twelfth pick.  This two round scenario is repeated for the rest of the draft.  All odd numbered rounds have Team 1 have the first pick and all even rounds have the highest team number picking first.

The league we created never followed this philosophy as most of us thought this way was never fair especially if you got the last pick in the first round.  Depending on the size of each league, the best talent is gone late in the third round.  This puts those teams at a disadvantage of having to take the best available player or drafting a sleeper.  To combat this, we created a custom draft.  This still follows the philosophy that the picks are reversed every other round, but everyone has a chance for the first pick on every odd round.

Please see our templates showing both standard and custom made drafts sorted by league size on the left side of the web page.

The hardest part is determining the team numbers for all of your members.  Most of the drafts determine team numbers from the order in which you sign up.  The first member of the league gets Team 1, second member is Team 2, etc.  This is the easiest way, but not necessarily the fairest.

In the early years before everyone had computers, we used a deck of cards (Pieces of paper would do as well).  We had every member of the league pick a card and the number on that card was their team number.  This only works when you have everyone present at the draft.

Nowadays, we set up the draft ahead of time, using a random number generator (scaled to the number of teams) to determine the team number assigned to each draft.  Then a second number is randomly correlated to the team number and members of our league pick a number (between 1 and the # of teams) and get the corresponding team number.  The team that finished last gets to choose first, and the person who set up the draft gets the last remaining team.  This person is usually the commissioner of the prior year, or the person who created the league.

Feel free to customize your own league, or you can simply use the custom league tables we have already created.  We recommend you do this several weeks prior to the draft.  This will allow teams to better plan their draft strategy and/or trade picks before draft day.
