Born 25 Dec 1810, Swinton Parish, Roxburgh Co., Scotland, died 7 May 1882. About 1840, he married HELEN LOWRIE, born 1814, died 9 Sep 1877.
Both buried North Plympton Cemetery, Lambton Co., Ont.
They had 12 children. James #1, James #2, John, Daughter, George, Robert, Andrew, Eli, Peter, Joseph, William and Elizabeth.
They raised 6 sons and 1 daughter.
Lost 4 sons and a daughter in
infancy or early childhood.
According to an Agriculture
Questionnaire Thomas filled out in 1853,
he stated he came to Canada in 1844, with his wife and an infant
female child. He had 4 pounds in his pocket, was in good health and
the will to make good. He obtained his first farm on credit and paid
10 shillings per acre to buy it.
An error could have been made on
this form as they had a son
George born in 1842 and not mentioned as coming to Canada with
his parents, and the infant should have been a male instead of female
infant.

Nothing known about this daughter,
father stated in 1853 that he
came to Canada with a wife and an infant female in 1844. This could
have been in error and should have read infant Male instead of
female child.
5. GEORGE CAIRNS: Born 16 Sep 1842, Berwickshire,
Scotland, died
26 Dec 1903. On the 31 Dec 1875, he married a widow, Mrs. Jane
(Duncan) Cummings, born 21 Mar 1851, died 2 Jan 1929.
(d/o William Duncan and Phoebe Kemp).
Both buried Beechwood Cemetery, Forest, Ont.
They had 3 children. William, Rena and Kenneth.
Don't know where he was in 1844 when
his parents came to Canada,
unless the form Thomas filled out is in error, or misread, and should
have read infant male instead of female child.
