Great Oakley - Friday 30th July
In the morning we ate the cornflakes which had been left for us, and then we were returned to Great Oakley after prayers. We were to stay in 'The 3 cups' - a former pub. We dumped our stuff in our 'home' and left for the park.
At first there were only two boys in the park. We went for lunch at the vicarage. (There was a new vicar keen to expand youth work in the area.) On returning to the park, we had a few good conversations with various people.
We returned to the 3 cups for dinner and chatted to Penny and Terry who we were staying with. As night drew in, some of the boys we had been talking to started throwing stones at the windows. We decided to pretend we had gone to bed, and so turned the lights out. Unfortunately, whilst the lights were out, I banged into a small cupboard, much to the amusement of those outside the window!
Saturday 31st July
There weren't many people to speak to in the morning, so we went back to the 3 cups where I spent the morning learning to juggle! The juggling balls became our talking point after lunch when we started some more good conversations with the young people. A lot of questions were asked concerning what we were doing and what we believed. After dinner we played cricket with the young people we'd met and carried on our conversations to challenge what they believed.
Sunday 1st August
This was designated our 'day of rest' by those looking after us, although we were more than happy to continue working! We started the day by going to church, half of us going to the Anglican service, and the other half to the Methodists with Penny and Terry. Then we went to Dovercourt beach for the afternoon and played in the sea :)
In the evening we went to Frinton Free Church. There was a mission going on in Frinton, so there were a lot of people attending the service, although that isn't unusual for Frinton Free Church normally!
Monday 2nd August
We were woken in the morning by some of the local lads singing under the window. When we were all up and dressed, we had an unaccompanied worship session, and then had a quiet time on our own with God. Then we prayed for each other and played a trust game. We left just after mid-day and the park was empty, so we continued in prayer whilst we waited for some people to show. When we'd finished praying, Daniel said if they wanted to talk with us, they had to make the first move. They did indeed come to talk to us, when they asked if we wanted to play cricket with them. We played until the ball was lost.
We returned home and cleaned the house before dinner. After dinner we returned to the park to watch a game of Pub rounders between Great and Little Oakley's. Most of our 'friends' were there. Great Oakley won. We left soon after the match, never to return to see the gang.
We prayed when we got back to the 3 cups, and it was felt we should go to Wrabness.
