Part Four

Heero watched as Duo disappeared with Zechs for the tour. He leaned against the wall with his arms folded.

Wufei sat, watching Heero. "Something's up," he stated.

"Hn," Heero remarked. Pushing away from the wall, he walked over and sat close to Wufei.

Wufei watched Heero closely. "Duo... is he all right?"

Cobalt blue eyes met Wufei's. "No," Heero said. "We're going to Rome. Duo's been granted some kind of religious pardon. I'm checking it all out."

Wufei tilted his head. He could sense that there was more to it but knew better than to press. "Let me know what you need from me," he said simply.

"I will," Heero said. "There's a Monsignor Elvay. I don't trust him. I've got a trace out, though."

Wufei nodded. "Anything else on your mind?"

"A couple of things. One, I'll tell you later. You were the other. I missed you," Heero said, lacing his fingers through Wufei's. "How is Zechs treating you?"

"Zechs is treating me like a prince... better than I deserve," Wufei said, returning the gentle grip. "He says I make him relaxed. Also, we have a lot of sex."

Heero laughed. "I can't fault him for that. I keep wondering when Duo's going to peel me off of him. What is it? I've gone years without anything... an occasional self-gratification, and now...I'm all over the place."

Wufei sighed. "I don't know but I understand. We had to live through the other times... when everything was death and fighting. Maybe we're having a reaction to that. Or maybe there is no reason." Wufei shrugged. "I'm not complaining."

"Neither am I," Heero said, feeling calmer. Leaning over, he kissed Wufei again. "You're still having an influence on my body," he added.

Wufei blushed slightly. "Mmmm. And you on mine."

"Good," Heero said. "Does Zechs still think I hate him?"

Wufei smiled. "Probably. He can be a bit... sensitive."

"He kinda reminds me of Duo like that," Heero said. "I'll talk to him later. Staying here is all right? I wouldn't want to crowd you and Zechs."

Wufei chuckled. "This place is... he calls it a 'small house'... but there's room for a couple of families here. You won't be crowding anyone. And he needs to... get used to the idea of you and Duo being around. That is if he wants to continue our relationship for any time."

"Hn," Heero remarked, wrapping his arms around Wufei. Leaning back against the sofa, Heero brought Wufei back against his chest. "You're right."

Wufei smiled.

Zechs led Duo to the kitchen and began pulling food from the refrigeration unit. Looking over his shoulder, he asked Duo, "Where are you from, Duo?"

Duo blinked.

"From?" he said, then tilted his head. "The Colonies, Zechsie. You mean which one? All of em. Why?"

"I'm trying to decided what to cook here. Different places have different tastes," Zechs explained, smiling at the Zechsie.

"Hn," Duo remarked. "I like almost anything. Fix what you like - it'll be fine."

"Got it," Zechs said and began cooking.

"You like being a Preventer?" Duo asked, leaning on a counter. He nabbed a taste from one of the bowls Zechs had.

"Well, since it's very close to what I was doing before, and there are no more wars, I like it well enough." he said, chopping a few vegetables up and throwing them into a hot wok. "Why don't you join? You're a great pilot."

Duo shrugged with exaggerated modesty. "I don't mind helping out... but I prefer not to join up for anything too steady. I did that once... once was enough," he said, shaking his head.

Zechs smiled, stir-frying the food and placing it in bowls. "That's right," he said. "Time for you to live a little. Preventer work will, unfortunately always be here." He then presented Duo with a large bowl of steaming food and made one for himself.

Looking up at Duo, Zechs glanced towards the living area. "Should we invite them in?" he asked.

Duo laughed. "Heero will have smelled the food by now. Five, four, three..."

"Hn," Heero remarked, suddenly standing in the kitchen. He looked to Zechs then Duo and back.

"Have a seat and a bowl." Zechs said, dishing up some food and placing it near Duo's. He made another for Wufei as well.

"Thanks," Heero said, sitting next to Duo.

Wufei came in behind Heero. "Trying to keep all the food to yourself, Maxwell?" he said, nudging Duo as he went by.

"Well I figure you get enough to eat... around here..." Duo said wickedly.

Zechs coughed, nearly passing a mushroom through his nose at Duo's innuendo. He grabbed a glass of water as he tried not to blush and failed. "Thanks, Duo," he said, sitting down.

Wufei just snorted softly, getting his bowl, "Nice..." he remarked, sitting down. "But true..."

Duo winked at Zechs.

Zechs turned a healthy shade of crimson and nodded towards Duo. "Is he always like this?" he asked Heero.

"Yes," Heero remarked and then turned his attention to making the food disappear.

"Like what?" Duo said innocently, looking mournfully at his now empty bowl. "Man it sure goes fast with so many mouths around."

"Not all gone yet," Zechs said, moving to re-fill Duo's bowl. "And, like making Zechsie pass mushrooms through his nose."

"Wow I wouldn't think a mushroom could fit through there," Duo said guilelessly. "The human body is amazing... isn't it?"

Heero, who had finished his meal, turned to look at Duo. "You want that?" he asked.

Duo was already tucking the food away. "Want.. what?" he said with his mouth full.

Zechs shook his head. "You'd be surprised," he said. Then, "Look, I don't know if this will be necessary, but if you need something as regards the Church, my family had some ties a long time ago," he offered.

Duo glanced at Zechs, finishing the last bite and wiping his mouth neatly. "Oh yeah? Ties? Um, I'll keep that in mind. I don't think it will matter. I'm just going to... uh, tell em what I think about something. Then we'll probably be thrown out and we can get on with our happy lives."

"Ok," Zechs said. "My father had a tradition of aiding and abetting. You can hide out here, if need be."

"Cool," Duo said. "Can always use a good safe house."

"Good," Zechs said.

"Hey," Heero said, catching Zechs' attention. "All of that stuff during the war." He shrugged.

Zechs looked up, remembering the battles he and Heero had fought against each other. "It's over," he said.

"Hn," Heero remarked in agreement.

"I love watching you guys fall all over each other," Duo said, grinning.

Zechs looked over at Duo. "There is just a lot of love in this room, Duo." he said, "Want the last serving?"

"Since no one else does, sure," Duo said, pouncing on it.

Zechs gathered empty bowls and winked at Wufei as he stood.

Duo edged over to Heero. "Wanna come up and see the guest room?" he suggested.

Heero looked into the violet eyes. He nodded once, then stood. "Show me," he said. "Thanks, Zechs."

Zechs raised a hand. "Not a problem. Of course, now you aren't strangers here. That means, you have full run of the house. Enjoy."

Duo's eyes gleamed. "Thanks!" he said. "I noticed you have a rather nice antique music collection..."

Zechs' eyebrows raised. "Yes I do," he said. "The Ancient classics and a wide range of twentieth and twenty-first century. They can be accessed in any of the rooms as well."

Duo's grin got bigger. "Cool!" was all he said.

"Nice to see a fellow aficionado," Zechs remarked. "Some of it used to drive Treize up a wall."

The braided boy grinned. "I guess he was a classics man," he said. He grabbed Heero's hand and dragged him towards the stairs, swooping by to pick up their bags, 1 each, on the way.

Zechs watched as Heero and Duo left. He looked over at Wufei. "Are you ok?" he asked.

Wufei smiled slightly. "I'm quite good, actually," he said. "How about you?"

"I'm good," Zechs answered. "This is rather interesting. I'm beginning to see the other half of the Gundam pilots. Hopefully, making a few new friends as well."

Wufei regarded Zechs. "They're scoping you out," he said. "Some habits don't change very easily."

Zechs shrugged. "I'm sure I'm doing the same. I call it *Barracks Test*," he said.

Wufei raised his eyebrows. "Fine. But keep your eyes on your antique CDs. Duo... has been known to acquire things."

"Hmm," Zechs said. "Will do," he added and then stood. "I think I'll turn in."

Wufei smiled and simply followed.

Duo led Heero up the stairs, dragging their bags along. The room he'd chosen during Zechs' tour of the house was one that was down the hall and across from Zechs' bedroom. It was next to the room that had been designated as Wufei's, but it was pretty much a sure bet that Wufei didn't use that room for sleeping very much.

Duo pointed to Zechs' door. "The 'master' bedroom," he said, and winked.

Their room was much like Wufei's - spacious, well-furnished, and tasteful.

"Whaddaya think?" he said, flopping on the huge bed.

Heero glanced around the room and nodded. "It's fine," he said, then went to sit next to Duo.

Duo grinned. "Master of understatement," he said. "So you had a little talk with Wu-man - how's he doing?"

"He's good," Heero said. "He says Zechs is treating him well." Heero stretched out next to Duo on the bed and slid an arm around his waist.

Duo leaned over Heero. "That's good," he said, gazing at his lover. Heero's beauty always stopped him.

Reaching up, Heero took Duo's face in his hands. He pulled the braided pilot down and kissed him deeply. It was always the eyes that caught Heero. Duo had the biggest eyes he'd ever seen, the violet depths held the power to catch him every time.

Duo relaxed into the kiss. After a while, he leaned back, reaching to brush at strands of Heero's thick hair. "Well," he said, and made a small face. "We're here..."

Heero took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Yeah," he said. He then took Duo around the waist and rolled on top of him. "We're here. Now who is *they*?" he asked, looking into those violet depths.

Duo's eyes widened and he took a sudden breath. He didn't try to pretend he'd forgotten the question from the shuttle conversation. He swallowed. "Heero..." He closed his eyes for a moment, and, keeping them closed, said, "M-my demons."

'Well now the cat's out of the bag,' one of the demons remarked in Duo's head.

'Yeah,' another one said and they all snickered.

'I can't lie to him,' Duo told them silently.

"Hn," Heero remarked, considering. Leaning down, he kissed Duo's cheek gently, then his forehead. "I see," he said as he brushed Duo's lips with his own. "I understand."

Duo opened his eyes. "How... how can you?" he said aloud.

Heero moved slightly and pressed his mouth to the soft skin at Duo's neck. It was one of his favorite target spots on the braided pilot's body. "It's not the same," he said, quietly, "...but if I say Epyon and Wing Zero, would that give you a clue?"

Duo shivered. "Um... not really," he said. But he stopped and thought about it. He remembered his own experienced with Wing Zero - which brought another slight shudder. That Gundam had brought forth the greatest of his demons - the strongest, most silent Shinigami himself, who never came to Duo unless someone was going to die. During the war, that had been often enough, but in Wing Zero, he'd actually seen the master demon manifest outside his own mind and *that* had terrified him.

He thought some more. "Heero...? Wing Zero... talk to you?"

"Um-hm," Heero replied, licking the back of Duo's ear. "So did Epyon."

"But... but was it them? Or just something in your own head?" Duo asked, sliding his arms around Heero's waist, anchoring to the most solid object in the universe - Heero Yuy.

Heero stopped, thinking about the question. He looked down at Duo with a slight crease on his brow. "That's hard to answer. I know the machines don't talk, but I felt something that went beyond what my thoughts were," he answered, not completely satisfied with the explanation.

"You're right," Duo said after a moment. "It's not the same." He sighed. He'd half expected some other reaction. But this was Heero.

'He's cagey,' Eligor snickered in Duo's mind. 'He's watching you.'

'I'd watch me too,' Duo mentally replied, refusing to be baited on the subject of Heero.

"So how is it for you?" Heero asked.

Duo sighed. "When I was a kid, I was on the street, running with other kids. We stole, begged, whatever. One time Father Maxwell helped me out. The Church took in kids, orphans, tried to find homes for em. There were a lot of kids without homes. I remember my first night there... Father fed us, led us in a prayer, and then lights out. We were all in one big room with lots of beds - cots really, but it was a bed to me. All ages, from really small kids to older ones like me. When the lights went out, there was quiet for a little while until Father went back down the hall. Then voices started up. Kids talking, sometimes to each other, sometimes to themselves. Some singing some dumb song, someone telling a joke, some kids bargaining over some stolen food from supper... voices in the dark..."

Duo looked up at Heero. "That's what it's like," he said simply.

"Hn," Heero remarked, filing the information away. "So what did you and Zechs talk about?" he asked.

"Nothing much," Duo said, starting to relax a little. "What it's like being a Preventer. What it's like being rich... nothing too cool."

"Oh," Heero said. "He cooks good." Heero reached down and unfastened Duo's shirt. He then slid his hands along Duo's bare skin, possessively.

"You... really don't care?" Duo breathed, his back arching slightly, feeling his lover's strong sure hands on his skin.

Heero kissed Duo's chest and moved his mouth over one of the taut peaks, swirling his tongue over it. "About what?" Heero said softly.

Duo groaned. "Bout... them..." his hands moved restlessly down Heero's back. The demons waited curiously for the answer.

"No," Heero said, moving to Duo's other side, repeating his previous action. "As long as they don't mess with you too bad, they can stay. The minute I catch you walking off a rooftop, they gotta go. I want you around for a very long time."

The demons snickered. 'Mighty white of him,' one of them quipped. 'Yeah!' 'Yeah...'

Duo meanwhile was loosing the thread, his body squirming under Heero's mouth. "Uh... oh.... okay," he whispered. "Ohhh... Heero..."

Heero kissed his way down Duo's chest to the braided pilot's stomach, feeling his body tighten painfully. His hands unfastened Duo's pants and then slid across the warm flesh there. Heero moved down further, kissing Duo's lower stomach as he inhaled the scent of his lover deep into his nostrils.

Turning his head slightly, Heero then laid his face on Duo's stomach, feeling that calm that only the braided pilot could bring to him.

Duo closed his eyes, winding the fingers of one hand into Heero's thick hair, and feeling the chatter in his head fade.
