Week 6: New Zealand- South Island
to Routeburn Track and Milford Sound
Our first stop was Kaikoura, where we stayed at Room with a View, an appartment overlooking the town and ocean- with a bath on the verandah! The town was nice, the big dinner speciality is crayfish, which we tried. Sam had her holiday highlight here when she saved a little hedgehog who had wondered onto the road...aaaaah....
The main thing to do in Kaikoura is dolphin swimming, and we did this next day- really good, they actually play with you! We jumped in and they start to circle you, so you circle them and they might hang around for a couple of minutes before they're bored. There were hundreds of them out there, so we had more than a dolphin each!
Then a stop in Christchurch- the English city. You can even go punting on the Avon! It's a nice place to pass away an afternoon- very green and small enough to explore extensively on a short walk.
The next day was a long drive to Franz Josef, for the heli-hike, which we did the next day.
The glacier is seen from a distance a short walk from the car park, left, but a helicopter is the best way to get on to it.
This was a very expensive half-day, but it's the only way to get straight to the heart of the ice. The formations on the glacier were fantastic, and made up for the difficult terrain- we definitely needed the axes they gave us!
Then on to Wanaka, along the spectacular Haast pass. We tried out a jet boat ride in Wanaka, before visiting Puzzling World, which boasts a maze, a leaning tower (right) and a tilting house- great value for money!  The next day we headed to Queenstown.
