You should start to breed chochobos as soon as you can! You can start racing your chocobos when Cloud comes back in the 2nd disk. I suggest to start to collect your chocobos while you're Tifa or Cid, or as soon as you can rent stables.

1. Chocobo Lure Materia
2. 1 great male Chocobo
3. 1 great female Chocobo
4. 1 good male Chocobo
5. 1 good female Chocobo
6. 1 wonderful Chocobo
7. about 40 Sylkis greens
8. 3 carob nuts
9. 1 zieo nut
10. A LOT of Gil (you can sell a mastered "All Materia")
11. 6 stables at the chocobo ranch

Catching Chocobos:

1. Great chocobos are located on the chocobo tracks south of Mideel.
2. Good chocobos are located on the chocobo tracks east of the Gold Saucer
3. Wonderful Chocobos are on the tracks in the northern continent (You don't need this chocobo untill you have a Black chocobo, also, some of the chocobos here are poor).

While you have the chocobo lure materia on, walk on the chocobo tracks untill you get into a fight with a chocobo and some enemies. To catch the chocobo, you must defeat the enemy before the chocobo gets nervous and runs away--feeding it some greens will keep the chocobo distracted while you kill off the enemies. DON'T attack the chocobo or it will attack you and run away!

Feeding Your Chocobos:

You can buy Sylkis greens from Chocobosage who lives north of Bone Village.

1. Feed your Good and Great chocobos about 10 or more Sylkis greens each.
2. Feed your Green and Blue chocobos about 20-25 greens
3. Feed your Black chocobo 25 greens, or untill it can't improve anymore.
4. Feed your Wonderful chocobo the same as the Black chocobo.
5. Here are all the other greens you can feed them, but Sylkis greens are the best: Grysahl, Krakka, Tantal, Pashana, Curiel, Minnett, Sylkis.

Chocobo Racing:

Your chocobos have to be in a certain class before they can breed. So go to the Gold Saucer and talk to Esther who is in Chocobo Square. She'll ask you if you want to race. After you choose who will race, she will ask you if you want to take the long or short course. This won't really matter unless you want more GP (you can use the GP in the Battle Square to get Cloud's Omnislash limit break).

After you race 3 times, your chocobo will be upgraded to the next class.

1. Good and Great chocobos must be in B Class.
2. Blue and Green chocobos must be in A Class
3. the Black chocobo must be in S Class
4. the Wonderful chocobo must be in S Class

(You can go here if you're too lazy to do all those races :p)

Breeding:

1. Carob nuts are from dinosaur like enemies , you can steal one or receive it after killing it, they're located south of Bone Village.
2. Zeio nuts are from the Goblins in the forest of Goblin Island, steal ? or receive them after killing them.

When all of your Chocobos are in the right class, breed them this way:

1. Good male + Great female + Carob nut = Blue Chocobo (sometime it can turnout to be a green chocobo too)
2. Great male + Good female + Carob nut = Green Chocobo (sometimes blue too)
3. Blue chocobo + Green chocobo + Carob nut = Black Chocobo
4. Black chocobo + Wonderful Chocobo + Zeio nut = Gold Chocobo

You can't breed chocobos that just mated, or were just born, so you can resume your quest once in a while.
