Urthblade “Urthblade!” a sweet voice called. “Come here, honey.” I turned from where I was playing in the sand. My mother was standing at the entrance of our cave. My extraordinary sense of smell told me we were candied chestnuts, October ale, and Hotroot Soup. Licking my lips, I jumped up and ran to my parents. My mother, Songwind, and father, Urthsky, were waiting at the table. I climbed into my chair and started to eat. I was no more than eight seasons old then. I was born on the East Shore. My parents raised me there. Those were the days . . . . But sadly, they didn’t last. The next morning, I was awakened by the sound braking glass, clanging steel, and mad shouts. I sat up and saw my father protecting my wounded mother and I. Around us, a horde of ugly looking rats shouted and attacked. Songwind was slowing crawling up to me. I watched as her eyes clouded over and she fell dead next to me. I climbed out of my bed and shook her. I thought she would get back up, but she didn’t. My father swung a cutlass that he had stolen from the rats. One rat charged him from the back. Urthsky didn’t see the rat. The rat staved him in the back several times. I started to cry when I saw my father fall dead. The rat tried to pick me up. He said, “Aw! How cute! Look, boys, another oarslave!” I picked up the nearest weapon as his ugly paw got closer to me. I slashed at his paw with the dagger I found. He yanked his paw back, but not before I cut his thumb off. Through my tears, I saw him pull out his sword. I felt the blood of warriors raise in me as he swung. I ducked with speed even I didn’t know I had. As the blade sailed over my head, I tackled the rat. Before I could lift the dagger, another rat picked me up from behind. The rat I tackled stood up and said, “No one attacks Modhin the Slayer, and gets away. But I won’t kill you. No! You’ll be the front oarslave of my ship, Bloodchannel!” After several seasons, we sailed around the land. I was chained the front oar for a season with half rations. Modhin had made a name for me, Thumbchop. I think the reason is because I cut his left thumb off. We were on the West Coast sailing north. Modhin had me brought on deck when we reached a place called Salamandastron. I stared at the mountain. I heard Modhin was saying behind me, “Get the crew and Thumbchop ashore. Modhin sent a messenger to Salamandastron, but I don’t think he returned. That night, Lord Russano came out to rescue me. I managed to break the chains on my paws when the rats attacked. I dodged between the sea rats as they tried to stop me. I was on the shore of Salamandastron. With me were the sea rats from the Bloodchannel, who were attacking Lord Russano. They out-numbered him, his wife, and hares ten-to-one. I charged into the pile of rats swinging my small, but strong fists. I let out the battle cry that Lord Russano was yelling. “Eulialia!” I guess that hearing my war cry gave Lord Russano extra strength. Suddenly, sea rats went flying in the air as a hardwood stick gripped tightly in a monstrous paw shot up. He pulled himself from the rats and made his way over to me. He tossed me a broad sword still in its scabbard. The moment after he did, the sea rats tackled him again. Whipping out the sword, I charged into the swarming sea rats. I stabbed, punched, and kicked. Soon there was less than a score of sea rats left—including Modhin the Slayer, Captain of the Bloodchannel. I was tackled from behind. Before the severely weakened Lord Russano could help, Modhin jumped on his back. He sank his sword into the Badger Lord’s unprotected back. I watched helplessly as my parents’ murderer killed another. I felt uncontrollable rage build up. I jumped free from the rat that held me. I picked up my new sword and attacked. I soon found myself standing in the middle of a slaughter. I completely ignored the sea rat carcasses as I made my way to Lord Russano. I wept when I saw his dead form. After a while, I decided to travel for some place far from this scene. I found my way to Redwall Abbey. After several seasons, I returned to the fire mountain. I was accepted as a member of the Long Patrol. Briggandy Silverbank When he was young he lived with his parents and siblings in Holt Silverbank. Friends visited often and he knew many beasts. He would often go travelling with friends of the family, especially Maximus (an otter) and knew the areas well around his home. When he was five seasons old, his little sister Sky was born and he and his brother would have to do much of their playing outside, which furthered his knowledge of the area. He swam in the river everyday, he learned to catch fish with his paws and shoot smooth pebbles in a sling he made (with his brother's help), he could skip a rock as good as any, and even had some knowledge of sailing from one of his excursions with Maximus. When he was about ten seasons old his entire family was captured by corsairs so he started travelling. He made new friends as well as visited old ones. He learned how to use a long bow, dagger, and others including his favourite, the twin sabres, which he also acquired during this time. He travels often which is how he came across thelegendary mountain. He is mischevious, a born rebel. He is quite easygoing, is fearless, and has a carefree, devil-may-care attitude, especially in battle. He likes to fight, whether it be play-fighting, wrestling, or fighting foebeasts, whom he will fight to the death if need be, for reasons such as freedom or otherbeasts in need. He is wise most of the time, swift and cunning, alert and ready for anything (once again, especially in battle). Aside from that, he is playful, good natured, and extremely friendly. He has lots of energy and will wink and grin a lot. He can most always be seen wearing a bright blue tunic. I sat on the battlements of Redwall Abbey. As I looked out into Mossflower I thought," I wonder why I don't live here, I have been visiting for a couple of days and I like it, but my home is Salamandastron and I must stay there." Suddenly, a flash of light caught my eye. I decided to go check it out. As i got in there, the flash happened again. As I looked to my right I saw it. A massive wolf with an oversized sword charging straight at me. He swung the weapon as I swung my axe. The sound of metal on metal rang in the air. The wolf snarled and I roared. Noise was arising from Redwall. I saw Josmo the warrior hedgehog swinging Martin the Warrior's blade. The wolf's eyes grew wide with fear, and he ran. I hesitated for a moment and went after him with Josmo right behind me. We chased him to a river and saw him dive in. He swam to the other side and gave a bloodcurdling howl. "OWERRRRRRRRRR!" We couldn't believe it. More than 5 score of rats came charging out of the trees and were heavily armed. Me and Josmo ran as hard as we could back to the Abbey with more than half the rats chasing us. We swung the main gate open and barged in and slammed it as hard as we could. We were rewarded with an agonized squeak and saw a footpaw under the door. "Leave him until mornin'," Josmo said calmly," he's not gettin' no wheres soon." We went in and dicussed the issue with the entire Abbey. We all agreed that we had to get an army. "I'll send some people to Salamandastron to get the Long Patrol." I said. "Good, we need a big army to defaet this wolf. I have been looking trough the records and found that this might be Urgan The Killer. He has taken over many lands before and is planning on taking over Mossflower," Abbot Mordifalus said. The wolf was deep in thought. "How will I get controll of Mossflower with that that badger and his friends alive? I need a plan to kill them. Let's see, I could take a captive and lure him out and then ambush him! Rats, prepare to take prisoners!" A huge cheer arose from the waiting rats. "Urgan! Uran! Urgan! Kiiiiiiillllllllllllllll! The Redwallers waved goodbye to 3 young squirrels as they set out for Salamandastron. They bounded into the horizon and left us. We went inside and were about to question the rat when we saw that he had been freed! There was a note that said," We just stole a little mole, and if you ever want to see her again, you'll have to send the badger out to fight me at noon tomorrow." The squirrels were almost to Salandastron when a couple of ferrets charged them with large daggers. The squirrels ran their fastest. One dropped with an arrow in his back. The other two ran as the majestic mountain of Salamandastron loomed in the distance. As they got there they saw that the ferrets were met with arrows, javelins, and slingstones. The vermin scattered and hid as we were brought into the Mountain. A large hare appered and said, "I am Tammelo de Formello Tussock. How may we help you?" he squirrels told the story and Tammo sent half of the Long Patrol out to help. The hot noon sun scorched down outside Redwall. The Abbey dwellers had a plan. I walked out to meet the wolf. We dropped our weapons and then the wolf howled. The rats came pouring out of the woods armed and shouting. The Redwallers ran at the little molebabe and scooped her up an ran back into the Abbey. I was being overtaken by the rats when I heard it. The battle cries of Salamndastron and Redwall. "Elluuuuuuuiiiiiiiiiiaaaaaaaaaaaa!" "Redwaaaaaaalllllllllllllll! The surging group came in and swept over the rats. I picked up my axe and charged at the wolf. I swung the blade and hit him in the chest as Josmo stabbed him. He fell over and was dead. With evey evil creature slain, we went into the Abbey and had lunch. Later that day we set out to go back to Salamandastron. |
