Das Awkscht Fescht 2000 -- Macungie, PA
Without a doubt, Das Awkscht Fescht, or Macungie as it's more commonly known, is my favorite automotive event of the year.  I've been attending since 1965 (just 2 years after it started), and only missed one year -- when I was in the hospital!  It's not just a car show -- in addition to 3 days of some of the most spectacular cars in the region (over 3,400 in total), it also boasts a large flea market all 3 days, a craft fair, a HUGE toy show on Saturday (the largest toy show in the country!) -- and if all this tires you out, there's a pool right on the grounds for a refreshing dip!

This year's show was spectacular as always.  Janice and I arrived early afternoon on Thursday, having driven Wadsworth (our '56 Imperial) down -- and using the ice-cold factory air through the entire trip!  Thursday is set up day and not an official show day.  I like to get a jump on things and pick through the flea market early -- and this year it really paid off!  At one of the vendors who'd just finished setting up, I found the deluxe prestige catalogue for Wadsworth -- which I'd been searching for in vain ever since I got the car 7 months ago!  The brochure was in almost mint condition, and was a very reasonable price -- and if I had waited until Friday, it almost certainly would have been snapped up by another lucky collector!

Janice got lucky twice at the toy show Saturday -- one of the very first vendors she came to had a gorgeous, mint-in-box 15" Shirley Temple doll, circa 1959 -- 1963.  Shirleys in this condition don't come along too often, so she was walking on air.  A little later, she came across someone who had a full store display for Ideal's Petite Princess line of dollhouse furniture, which dated back to 1964.  The piece was set up as a sort of dollhouse, and contains each and every piece from the line -- Janice had only seen one other store display, and it was a photo in a book.  As she played with these when she was a child, she was delighted to come across such an unusual and complete piece!

But let's not forget the main reason for going to the show -- the cars!  This is an entirely non-judged show, and in spite of this -- or perhaps because of it -- is a sell-out each year.  As in previous years, we didn't know what to look at first!  So without any further ado, here are some automotive highlights of Macungie 2000!
To my recollection, this is the only example of a '51 Crown Imperial limousine I have ever seen.  Only 338 were built in '51 and '52, and this one was a beautifully restored specimen.  The car featured power steering and 4 wheel disc brakes -- both of which were industry firsts.
A '55 Imperial Newport, my all time favorite model of Imperial (sorry, Wadsworth!).  This Nugget Gold over White example had been the subject of a frame up restoration, and is absolutely spectacular.
To my delight, a second '55 Imperial Newport showed up.  This one was in Jade Green over White and was a very nice, mostly original car.  I would have been very happy to bring this car home!
And here is a picture of the only '56 Imperial that was there -- the one and only Wadsworth!  To learn more about him, click here.
This Sunset Rose '57 Imperial Coupe is totally original and unrestored.  The car is in fine condition, only needing some upholstery work which the owner, a young artist, is planning on having done.  I've seen this car at Macungie over the last several years and also at the Chrysler Nationals.
