Alternatives to CSU Basketball 2003

It's pretty obvious that nobody is heading down to the Convo for Cleveland State basketball games anymore. So, as I had last year, I'm bringing out some decent alternatives for your enjoyment during this cold and dreary winter. Sorry, this year's list does not invlude the women's basketball team, which hasn't exactly been entertaining this season.

CSU Men's and Women's Swimming
Head Coaches: Wally Morton (men), Mike Lehto (women)
Venue: Robert F. Busbey Natatorium
Analysis: As I stated last season, I am biased towards the swim team, but with good reason. The men's swim team is once again poised to make a run at the Horizon League crown this season, and the women's team is always competitive. This season will be capped by the conference championships at the end of February.

CSU Wrestling
Coach: Jack Effner
Venue: Woodling Gym
Analysis: An new NCAA powerhouse. A Top 25 squad. And it's nowhere near the Convocation Center. That's what you get with Effner's crew at Woodling Gym. Currently ranked among the best in wrestling, the grapplers sport five potential NCAA qualifiers and all of them could bring CSU another All-American. Tickets can be sparse, though, as the Kent State meet reportedly drew 2,000.

Cleveland Cavaliers
Coach: John Lucas
Venue: Gund Arena
Analysis: The Cavs aren't good. Everybody knows this. But where else can you go to see the future? Sure, there's an outside chance that LeBron James ends up at Gund Arena next season, but guys like Dejuan Wagner, Ricky Davis and Carlos Boozer have proven themselves to be decent players in their own right.

Cleveland Force
Coach: Andy Schmetzer
Venue: CSU Convocation Center
Analysis: And the tradition begins anew. The Force name, long lost in the lore of the old MISL of the 1980s. Now they're back, as the Crunch roster dons the updated Force garb and takes on their foes in the new MISL.

Cleveland Barons
Coach: Roy Sommer
Venue: Gund Arena
Analysis: I'm a bit surprised that Cleveland got a new minor-league hockey team, considering that the old one, the Lumberjacks, folded because, among other reasons, nobody ever went to the games! The Barons are the minor league affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, so catch a game and get a glimpse of some future NHL stars.
