  Eugene P. Fish
Eugene P. Fish was born September 9, 1834, in Leroy, Calhoun co., Michigan.   He died January 1, 1902, in the Portland Village, Ionia, Michigan.  

Eugene's parents were Silas & Rebecca (Millard) Fish.  He was the fourth of eight children.

Eugene married Julia Ann Stevens, daughter of Edward & Mary Stevens, November 10, 1864. They were married in Bedford, Calhoun, Michigan while Eugene was on furlough during the Civil War.  Lorenzo Fish & Abner June were witnesses.  

Eugene enlisted as a Private on 10 May 1861 in Battle Creek at the age of 26 to serve in the Civil War.  He was Enlisted in Company C, 2nd Infantry Regiment Michigan Volunteers on 25 May 1861 and was mustered out on 28 July 1865 in Delaney House, DC.

Eugene and Julia were later divorced sometime between 1873 & 1880.   According to family recollections, Julia left Eugene because he was rough and cruel.  After the death of their daughter, Mary Fish, she took the two boys and fled to California.
[Date of divorce is estimated since the birth of their third child, Robert Fish, is 1873 and Eugene is later listed as 'Divorced' in the 1880 MI census while living with his mother and stepfather.]

During his final years, Eugene was a carpenter.

Eugene is buried in the Portland Cemetery in lot 7 ER.

1850 - Leroy twp, Calhoun co, Michigan   [Age 12]
Eugene Fish, age 12, is living with his parents, Silas (48) and Rebecca (44) Fish, and brothers and sisters, John (18), Schuyler (15), Ann E. (9), Olive (7) and Edward (4).

They are located three farms down from the Stevens' farm, where Julia Ann Stevens (2) is located.

The farm located next to Silas Fish and family is that of Olive W. Mulhollen (52), her son, William D. Mulhollen (16) and the family of Abner June (26), with wife Amanda June (21), children Mendusson (2) and Mary Ann June (1-month).  Olive (Millard) Mulhollen, is the sister of Rebecca (Millard) Fish.  Amanda (Fish) June is the Eugene's older sister.

1860 - Bedford twp, Calhoun co, Michigan   [Age 21]
Eugene Fish, age 21, is living with with his mother (Rebecca) Catharine Fish, and brother Edward (13) and sister, Olive (18).  Also living in the household is Mary Calalhan (10).  Eugene is listed as a "Laborer".

Located next to the household of is that of George Baldwin (21) and his wife Eilza (Fish) Baldwin (19).  Eliza is is Eugene's younger sister, Ann Eliza Fish.

1870 - Clinton Twp, Jasper co, Iowa   [Age 22]
Eugene Fish (30) is with his wife, Julia (Stevens) Fish (22), and their son Milo Fish (3).  They are living on the farm of Charles Stevens (25), Julia's older brother.  Eugene is listed as "Farm Laborer" while Julia is "Keeping House".

1880 - Bedford Twp, Calhoun co, Michigan   [Age 40]
Eugene Fish (40), is living with his mother Rebeckah (73) and his step-father, Edward Stevens (73).  Eugene is listed as a "Laborer", Edward is a "Cooper" and Rebeckah is "Keeping House.  Eugene is noted as being divorced.

Edward Stevens, is the father of Eugene's wife, Julia Ann Stevens.  Edward and Rebecca married in 1867.

Two households up from Edward Stevens is that of Henry Mantle (83), his wife Eliza A. Mantle (37) and their son John M. Mantle (10).  Eliza, is the sister of Eugene Fish and the widow of George Baldwin.

Eugene Fish is listed in Michigan 1894 Veteran's census as living in the Portland Village.

1900 - Portland Village, Ionia co, Michigan   [Age 62]
Eugene P. Fish is living as a 'Boarder' in the hotel/apartment of Ann Watson.   He is listed as being a widow.  His occupation is a "Carpenter", however he is shown as being unemployed for 8-months during the census year.  His birthdate is also listed as being in 1837.
