There are many different forms of kite flying. The form of most interest to Grant is the four line foil. Being pulled along the surface of the earth by a foil kite under (well most of the time) your control is quite a feeling. It has many names: tethered aviation, traction kiting just to name a few. As a result of our local fresh lakes freezing in winter, traction kiting on the ice and snow can be quite enjoyable. Recent developments in the kiting world have also made it possible to sail on the water. Of course, if you ever get a chance to visit the dry lake beds in California or Nevada, that might change your mind. You might even want to try an outing with the Buggy Boogie Thang (3). If you're looking for a great pair of gloves for the non-winter time that will save your hands, try a pair of rappelling gloves. As of October 22, 2001 MEC (4004-001,114g) has PMI Rappel/Belay Gloves for about CAD$38. They're made of goatskin with two layers of cowhide across the palm. You'll never get a rope burn with a pair of these on.
