Five Page Turners' World Tour I
The Mississippi Adventure
March 13-17, 2004
The ladies chose to make 2004 the year
of the Southern writer. To honor these literary luminaries, they
decided a road trip was in order. Where better to focus their
travels than
Mississippi, home of William Faulkner and Scott Morris,
among others?

While in Jackson, the ladies checked out Hal and Mal’s, a favorite haunt of the renowned “Sweet
Potato Queens.” The closest they got to the Queens was Sweet Potato beer. They did,
however, note their visit on the wall of the ladies’ loo.

No literary tour of Mississippi would be complete without a visit to the
home
of Eudora Welty, also in Jackson. Plans are in the works to open the
property to the public at a later date.

Traditionalists to the end, the
ladies
pour the obligatory bourbon on the grave of William Faulkner, in St.
Peter’s Cemetery, in Oxford. Although the house was then being
renovated, they were able to visit Rowan Oak, through the generosity of
Dr. Joseph Urgo, chair of the English
department at Ole Miss,
and Bill Griffith, the curator of the property.

The highlight of the trip was
spending
three hours discussing Waiting for April with its gifted
author, Scott Morris. He made the ladies feel that meeting with
them was as important as his official literary commitments. They
learned a lot, and it
was great fun.
