The Book Club

This site celebrates The Book Club, founded in 1982 as a reading group for residents of Chapel Glen, a neighborhood on the far west side of Indianapolis.  Over the years, the club's membership has ebbed and flowed.  Today, there are five members.  The club no longer has any connection to Chapel Glen (only two of the five members live in Chapel Glen), but it remains an active and vibrant community of readers.

The Club Members

The current members of The Book Club (left to right):  Janet, Linda, Jan, Esther and Barbara.   Jan, Barb and Janet were all volunteer parent assistants in the Chapel Glen Elementary School library when Esther was the librarian there.  Two changes occurred in 2004.  Karen, a long-time member, decided to take a leave of absence, and the group invited Linda to join.  She has proved to be a great addition to the Club!

The Club meets ten times per year.  Beginning in 2002, the "season" coincides with the calendar year.  The Club meets once per month beginning in March and continuing through December.  The December meeting is set aside for choosing the next year's books.  The Club experimented with different methods of choosing books but has settled on a system whereby each member chooses two books, for which she is the hostess.  The Club has a policy of not selecting an author more than once.
