Ancient Wonders

This page includes pictures of and a little bit of information about some of the ancient sites that I have been to. Archaeology and ancient history have always been a passion of mine and I hope that those of you who share the same interests will be able to derive some enjoyment from this page.

Stonehenge Begun around 3500 BC and completed around 2000 BC, the true purpose of this ancient wonder is still a mystery. Situated on Salisbury Plain in Southern England, the ruins of Stonehenge conjure up images of ancient Druids and rituals associated with the various solstices although the Druids utilized the site much later.

Chichen Itza An important Mayan site until the 10th century A.D consisting of an interesting mix of Toltec and Mayan cultures. This was once an active center, which practiced human sacrifice and was one of the most dramatic and sinister places in the New World.

Tulum An important Mayan site until the 16th century A.D beautifully situated on a cliff 12 meters above the sea. Tulum was a port city and the main castle structure doubled as a lighthouse. This lighthouse literally cast two beams of light that guided sailors through a narrow opening in the reef.

Troy The ancient city of Troy dates back over five thousand years even though Homer's Troy dates to about 1300 B.C. The site consists of ruins spanning thousands of years and consists of nine primary layers/levels. Heinrich Schliemann more-or-less destroyed the site after discovering it in 1870 in his search for the "real" Homeric Troy.

The Churches of the Book of Revelation John writes to the 7 churches in Turkey in the Book of Revelation, warning them of the error of their ways. (Pictures of a couple of the ancient sites.)

Cappadocia A wondrous mix of ancient natural and religious sites. Persecuted christians used the natural formations to their advantage to go into hiding in the centuries after Christ's death.

Mesa Verde Amazing ruins in the cliffs of southwest Colorado. Yes - in the cliffs, not on them. The Anasazi built these dwellings some time during the period 300-1300 AD and then mysteriously vanished.

Miscellaneous others Ancient cities of Sinop, Aphrodisias; Amasya, Sumela Monastery and the Temple of Artemis.

That's it for now. As I explore the world at greater lengths I will update this page. For those of you disappointed about not seeing Scottish and European castles - sorry; if it's not at least 1500-2000 years old, I don't consider it "ancient"!
