"Wait a minute! Last night you're wondering with me if she even likes me, and this morning you're both saying that you know for sure that she likes me?!" "Correction, Wheeler, loves you," Ma-Ti answered. Then both Ma-Ti and Kwame exchanged smug glances. "We didn't want to tell you. We wanted you to figure it out or Linka to have told you, but we talked about it this morning and..." Ma-Ti stated. "And decided to tell you," Kwame finished. "It's obvious to us that you two are crazy about each other!" "Maybe," Wheeler said softly. *************************************************************************************************************************************** "Ok. If Linka does have a thing for me, how do I advance?" Wheeler spoke softly to himself. Two hours ago Kwame and Ma-Ti woke him up. After they told him a million times that Linka was smitten with him, they left. ~And they totally didn't say anything about what to do next.~ It was almost ten o'clock. Wheeler stood, gazing into his mirror. He thought he looked good and also cute. He thought he was charming, too. ~What has Greg got that I don't? Money, but I doubt that's a reason why Linka likes him. He's too old for her, anyway.~ *********************************************************************************************************************** ~I know Wheeler likes me. It's just a matter of how much. I don't see how he looks at me any differently than he looks at all those other girls he flirts with...but then again, he isn't dating anyone...but then, with our job?...~ Linka was digging through her chest of old stuff. She was looking through keepsakes of her parents and grandparents. She treasured everything she had of theirs, especially all the lovely love letters. To my dearest Onya, I can never begin to explain how much you mean to me. You are the world to me. I love your forest green eyes and your smile which ends at your eyes. You're the keeper of my soul and you've got a heart of gold! You bring me so much happiness! I love you so..dear Onya, and it could never be told, just how much I love and adore you. -Your dearest Peter It was a little sappy and mushy among other things, but what wouldn't Linka give to read a love letter from Wheeler. *********************************************************************************************************************** ~I wonder if what I've said has gotten to her.~ Gi thought to herself as she walked up to Linka's quarters. "Linka?" Gi asked. Gi opened the cabin door and walked up to Linka's bedroom. She opened the door and saw a ton of old clothes and pictures. Linka was on both knees in front of the mess. She was holding a picture and was crying. "I shouldn't have been born," Linka said, in a thick voice. "Linka," Gi said, sadly. ~How could Linka think such a thing?~ "How can you think that?" She asked. "Why did I have to come into this world?! My mother died giving birth to me! I killed her!" A stream of tears were rolling down her face. "I've killed my father too, it's true!" After my mother died, my brother said he started drinking, for the first time in his life, to be exact. My brother said he drank constantly but that he managed to be sober when he needed to be. A third of the day, he would be sober to take care of me. Then, the rest of the day, my grandmother and brother took turns watching me. I loved him a lot. I thought he loved me, but how could he have loved me when I killed his one and only true love...my mother?" She finished in a whisper. "Linka..." Gi said, she was crying a storm herself, "how could your father not love you? When did you start thinking this?" "A moment ago," Linka replied. "What did your mother look like?" "She had green eyes and brown hair. She was a few inches shorter than me and had a smaller build, too," Linka described. "Are you holding a picture of her?" "Da, of her and my father!" Gi took a step forward and bent down and saw the picture. "Linka, you have your mothers face...her cheeks, her nose...you have long legs like her...and your eyes are the same in many ways...a dark, twinkling green that pierces someones soul when you look at them. You and your mother both have wavy hair, too. How can you possibly say that your father didn't love you when you look like her...plus, it was her body that allowed her to die, not you." "Yeah...but, Gi-" "Stop it! They both wanted to have you...and I bet you anything they're in Heaven saying that they didn't regret having you. You've always had a mother...you just haven't been able to see her." "Thank you Gi...and yes, I wasn't a surprise...I think--" "Even if--" "I know," Linka said with a smile. "You're a great friend." "And don't I know it, too!" And they both broke out into laughter. "Hey!" Gi exclaimed. "A love letter!" "Yeah. It was from my father to my mother. I love reading them...even though it wasn't to me." Linka blushed. ~Good...Now, I've got to get going and see Kwame and Ma-ti.~ "What's that smile for?" Linka asked, grinning. "Oh...you'll see." And her smile grew...a lot wider! *********************************************************************************************************************** "I don't like the tone of this note!" Ma-Ti exclaimed. "I didn't know that this note had a tone!" Kwame replied, a smug grin on his face. "Well...I don't like...Oh, I don't know...It spells something..." "A set up or something of the sorts," Kwame finished. "Oh boy!" Ma-Ti wailed. *********************************************************************************************************************** Gi was looking into her mirror. "My dearest Linka...My dearest Wheeler...God, I love myself." Interlude |
