The Flight Of the Kaw |

A warm rain fell on the red earth one August afternoon, and out of the window of the Geo Cruiser Linka could see it. It was so depressing, littered with spots of oil and blackened dirt. Birds shouted their last "words" into the air and finally passed into the great oblivion beyond. "I just hate an oil spill," said Wheeler, kicking the sandy red earth. "Me, too," said Linka, translating words in her head to English, even through her emotions. Dying birds were so depressing to her. Gi thought she saw a dolphin caught in an oil drum, and she, Kwame, and Ma-Ti waded out to help it. Linka and Wheeler were left to survey the mess on shore. Linka sadly looked out to the horizon, and suddenly she thought she saw a figure. "Wheeler! Look...over there!" Wheeler saw nothing, but when Linka started running towards the mysterious stranger, he followed as fast as he could. There certainly was someone--or something--over on the other side of the island. Leaning over a dying bird was a tall, thin woman in a coat of green...but she was sort of hovering a few feet off the ground! Linka gasped in awe. Wheeler just stood and stared. The woman saw them, flung her coffee-colored ponytail to one side, and stared back with deep, dark-brown eyes. "Who are you?" an amazed Linka gasped in Russian. "I am the Kaw, keeper of the birds," she answered back in English. She sort of looked like a crow, Linka realized. The bird in her arms finally drew its last breath and died with one last utter of "kaw..." Suddenly, Gaia appeared behind them. "Kaw! What are you doing here?" "I've come back to take what is mine! The birds have been saying my name for millions of years since I was banished!" Not wanting to get further into the argument, Gaia ushered the rest of the planeteers into their vehicle and called them back to Hope Island. "So, who is this Kaw woman?" Wheeler asked, munching on a burger. "Her name is Kaw Tweet-Chirp. She's my sister...and she's an Eco-Villain." "An Eco-Villain? Why? It looked as if she was trying to save that poor bird's life!" shouted Linka. Wheeler put a hand on her shoulder and tried to calm her down...but Linka could not be against anyone who wanted to save the birds. Part 2 |
