The Cape Florida Lighthouse is located on Key Biscayne
in the Bill
Braggs Cape Florida State Park. The lighthouse is set in a tropical
setting, surrounded by coconut palms and crystal clear blue water.
The tower is a bit different than other lighthouses I have climbed. The
stairs are attached to a central column going up the center of the lighthouse
rather than the spiral staircase attached to the walls that seems to be
much more common when it comes to lighthouses. Once at the top of the
lighthouse, the balcony outside was very narrow. Two people would have
trouble passing each other up there, and it would be a tight squeeze for
heavier people. Up another flight of stairs from the balcony was the room
holding the light itself. This is the only lighthouse that I have been
to where you are actually allowed to walk around this room.
From the top of the lighthouse there were some great views of the blue
water surrounding Key Biscayne. The houses of Stiltsville were clearly
visible not far from the shore. Downtown Miami and South Beach were also
visible far off over Biscayne Bay. |
