The violin bow in most cases is made of a pernambuco wood stick and horsehair. There are many various types and colors of horsehair such as Siberian, Mongolian, Manchurian, Polish, and Argentinian. The hair is collected and processed into small bundles called hanks, which are used in the re-hairing process. The Difference in the hair is mainly the strength of the strands, the amount of "barbs" on each strand and the ability for the hank of horsehair to hold rosin. Re-hairing a violin bow is very tedious work and should be left to professionals.
