EFFC 1998 in Sweden,  June 26-28  was held in the County of Västerbotten in Lappland.

The site of the EFFC was the Swedish town  Lycksele. From there the competitors were transfered to the competition venues in the river Malån, some 100 km away.

Hints on equipment and fishing methods

The rig that would be useful most of the time is a light line #3-5 rod and a floating line.
Although heavy nymphs will produce very well, many locals use dry flies like Klinkhamer and variations on the emerger and sedges. One very famed dry fly is of French origin, the E12 sedge, a fly by the way that with a gold head can produce wonders when the fish are deep.
Also all types of wet flies are good and many prefer Butcher types but also streamers and locally developed patterns in local colors.
I personally like to fish with fresh-water shrimp variants. And the bead heads are killers as I mentioned, although not allowed in the competition. Normally though, when practising to develop a knowledge of the area, these flies are "gold" worth to discover all the fish lies. It is not always they reveal themselves rising. Also the water color can vary from time to time and the fish are not easily spotted by sight. The water level can also vary a lot.
The River Malan flows into Skellefteälven, one of many big rivers in Lapland and also like too many, with so many hydro electric power stations that the wild salmon is extinct.
But the grayling and brown trout are still there.
Hopefully this new practise in the area by C & R will help the fish survive also the future traditional attacks from local trotters or anglers just for the fridge at home. -See You by the Waters.
