Fan Memories
My best Ron Hextall memory did not occur on the ice. Rather, it was
behind the scenes at the 1991 Flyers' Wives Carnival. For reasons that
don't really pertain to this story, I was waiting in the hallway outside
of Ovations (at the Spectrum) when I heard voices. I looked up to find
Ron and Diane Hextall approaching me. I was just about to look away to
give them privacy, when Ron made eye contact with me. The Hextall's
stopped to talk to me, but not to interrogate about why I was standing
there. It was a brief, polite exchange of pleasantries, something
neither of them were obligated to do.
That encounter actually overshadowed the reason I was originally
standing there. Diane and Ron were genuinely nice people. I am sure they
have no memory of those three minutes, but I treasure those 180 seconds
as much as any Flyers memory I have. I'll never forget how kind and
considerate a man Ron Hextall is unmasked.
There is no way i could speak of just one Ron Hextall memory. I saw him play
his rookie year, I was 7, he is the reason i began watching hockey and
playing hockey. But when I go to a game and look at the Flyer goaltender for
that nite I can still see Hextall doing his dance during the National Anthem.
Once the Anthem has finished i can still hear the klink klank sound of
Hextall banging the posts with his stick. When a player rushes a goalie
after the whistle i can still see that helmet jolt up and down because of his
yapping at the opposing players. I can still see this fiery competitor who
was one of the greatest goalie to watch as well as the most entertaining.
Ron Hextall the typical Philadelphia Flyer.
