HOCKEY CAREER

He started off playing minor hockey in St. Albans. He tried out for the Bellows Free Academy(BFA) high school team his first year at the school and was cut. The following year he tried out again and showed the coach what he missed the previous year.

In 1987, after John had completed High School he was drafted by Montreal. He was asked to immediately join the team but politely and firmly refused in favor of playing for the University of Vermont Catamounts. After his second year in ECAC Hockey, John moved to the NHL, for 10 games. He returned to UVM and became a full time NHL player the following season. He had a mediocre career with the Canadiens even though in the 1992-93 playoffs he set an NHL record by scoring back-to-back overtime goals in the Stanley Cup finals, helping the Canadiens win the Cup.

On February 9th, 1995, after 4 seasons with the Canadiens, John was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers along with Éric Desjardins and Gilbert Dionne for Mark Recchi. This move was the career starter that John needed. Since then he has been on the First and Second All-Star team, has led his team in goals and was the first American ever to have three 50 goal seasons in a row. Let's hope John can help bring the Cup to Philadelphia!!
