September 20: Decorating

I kinda thought I would be sitting out today, but I went over to help Rich get ready. We took boards over and set up shelves, and he tacked up the canvas on my booth, and opened the side door for the plants. The second trip he did by himself, taking plants. Trip three I went with him with the second load of plants, and I spent time setting them up while he worked on the parking and the signs. He set up handicapped parking this time. I got the booth really looking good. I remember four years ago when I got it really looking good, and I was so proud, and then they set up a bounce house in front of it. That won't happen this year. The bouncy things are insurance risks (no dunk tank, either, the diocese is keeping insurance costs down. Too much danger of child-molestation lawsuits to deal with other liabilities) and they lose money, anyway. In 1998 I got $300, while the bounce house lost money. They also made me so mad it's taken four years to come back.

Lileks:

I sat Gnat in front of one of the eMacs to play with the Toddler drawing software while I asked a question at the walk-up tech support.
"I’m running Jag on a newer iBook, and while I’m on an internet connection via Airport, I periodically get an OS 9 alert that I need to enable Apple Talk. It only happens when the connection is dropped for a half-second or so."
He nodded, thought a second, then explained how I should reset a certain setting, and that was that. (It worked.) I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: WALK-UP TECH SUPPORT. I pidy the foo who buys a PC at Best Buy, and goes back to ask a blue-shirt a question. I’ll bet if I dragged my 512K Mac to the Genius Bar and asked for help, they’d oblige - after they stopped cooing and petting it like a long-lost pet.
Hey, hey, hey! That's what Robert is going to be doing!

I caught up with the videotapes. Natch I'm rooting for Jan, the old lady mother of 5 in Survivor!
