Generation Six

JEDEDIAH DARROW AND PRUDENCE BAILEY

3rd Great Grandparents of Frances Louise Berlin

Parents of Ammirus Darrow

56. JEDEDIAH6 DARROW (Christopher, #112); b. 10 Aug 1721 at Waterford, New London, CT.

Frances Manwaring Caulkins wrote a book entitled, "History of NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, from the first survey of the coast in 1612, to 1860."  It was published in New London, New London, CT by H. D. Uttley in 1895.

A second book is titled, "HISTORY of MONTVILLE, CONNECTICUT, FORMERLY THE NORTH PARISH OF NEW LONDON FROM 1640 to 1896." It was compiled and arranged by Henry A. Baker, published by the "Press of The Case, Lockwood & Brainard Company" in 1896.

 I will be quoting from both of these books many times over the next generations.

Jedediah Darrow was the 12th of the 13 children born to Christopher Darrow and Elizabeth Packer. His father died in 1757 and upon his father's death he was willed the family farm. At this time he had been married for 5 years so supposedly he had lived on and worked the farm prior to his father's demise.

The book "History of Reedsburg and the upper Baraboo Valley" as told to Merton Krug by descendants of Henry A. Darrow states: "Jedediah Darrow, next in the line of descent, was born Aug. 10, 1721, and married Prudence Bailey. The date of his death is unknown." [The line of descent that he is talking about is from the first known Darrow in America, Sgt. George Darrow, (see generation 8), down to Henry A. Darrow.]

57. PRUDENCE6 BAILEY (John, #114); b. before 1731 at Connecticut; baptized 10 Oct 1731 at Groton, New London, CT;

Jedediah Darrow married Prudence Bailey (see #57), daughter of John Bailey Jr. and Elizabeth Stallion, on 27 Mar 1752. It is listed in the vital records for New London County, CT as:

"Jedidiah, of New London, s. Christopher, m. Prudence Ba[i]ley, of Groton, d. John, Mar 27, 1752"

Children of Jedidiah6 Darrow and Prudence Bailey (see #57) were as follows:

Death of Jedidiah Darrow and Prudence Bailey.

There is no official information on the death of Jedidiah or Prudence. Some researchers speculate that Jedidiah died in New York. Edward Everett Darrow in his letter to his cousin, Adelia states:

"....... And one question I am anxious to find answer to—did you ever hear where Amirus’ father died? (Edward is speaking of Ammirus and his father, Jedidiah." In a history of Boonville that I once read the statement was made that the first man buried there was either a Mr. Darrow or some one else whose name I have forgotten. If it was a Mr. Darrow, it would seem probable it was Jedediah. I do wish we knew........

Edward wrote this letter in 1923 and I sure wish he would have had more answers to his questions.  Perhaps we shall find them eventually.

Summary of Jedidiah Darrow and Prudence Bailey.

All of the children of Jedidiah and Prudence were born in Connecticut and then moved to New York after the Revolutionary War. At least two of those children are known to have fought in that war.  This was during the period when migration to the west was starting -- but it was not the west as we think of it today but western New York State. That migration continued over the next generations -- to Ohio and Wisconsin.
