"The Island Squatters"

M. Mamiel de Pontoise went to the Island of Orleans, and, as a result of
his reports drawn up on 23rd, 24th and 27th of November, 1751, the
Intendant decided to mete out punishment. On January 12th, 1752, he
ordered men named Curodeau, Pierre Lachance, JEAN BAPTISTE MARTEL and
Jean-Marie Plante, Parishioners of Saint Jean, and Pierre Sarraut, an
inkeeper at Saint-Famille, all of whom had put up houses contrary to the
regulation (printed below) of April 28th, 1745, to pull down the same
houses before May 1st of that year, and besides he condemed each squatter
to a hundred pounds fine (Édits et ordonnances, vol.11,p 594.).

Island of Orleans
Also previously known as: in 1535... "Island of Bacchus" ( because of
Vines), in
1536... Carter changed it to "Isle aux Coudres", in 1843 referred to as
"Island of Orleans". "Orleans" after Valois, 1st born , Duke of Orleans.
Indians called it "Minigo"..."Baccaleos" name credited to Indians also
but without much creditability. When the Hurons took control of the
island in 1651, they named it "L'Isle de Sainte-Marie" in memory of
destroyed mission of that name. In 1676 name changed again to "Earldom of
Saint-Laurent"...this lasted until 1770 when it became universally known
as the "Island of Orleans".
