Siberians are large, strong, robust cats that have a thick triple coat,
due mostly to their having survived for several hundred years in harsh Russian
winters. Great leapers, these hearty cats were believed to be
"overseers" in Russian Monasteries, walking along the tops of walls
"guarding" the inhabitants. Not until the late 1980’s were official
records kept by Russian Cat Clubs in hopes of recovering what was lost during
the period when pet ownership was unpopular due to poor living conditions and
war. It wasn’t until 1990 when a trade was made with a U.S. Himalayan breeder,
Elizabeth Terrell, that the Siberian breed was introduced to America. Since
then, they have become highly sought after as pets in the United States and are
making their mark in the show ring as well.
