News From WashingtonFT Lewis, WA 3 May 2004 Dear Friends and Family, Another week has passed with little out of the ordinary happening here at FT Lewis. Your soldiers continue to do a great job. We had some soldiers take advantage of a training opportunity with a local police agency. SPC Glen Bales, SPC Nathan Miller and SPC Chris Gorman all participated in the Emergency Vehicle Operators Course with the Yakima Police Department and SPC Bales participated in a "ride along" with the Yakima P.D. I want to make all aware that 7 May is Military Spouse Appreciation Day and share a poem by an anonymous author. No, I'm not the author….poetry is not my thing! A woman for all seasons A woman for today. She stands to meet all challenges And grows along the way. Her life is not an easy one With many loads to bear, But she proudly serves her husband And the uniform he wears. Although she didn't take the oath To preserve democracy She's there each day on the home front To keep our country free. She's foreign-born or country girl, Diversity you will find. But to be a military wife It takes a special kind. She's one who keeps on going Through adversity and pain. She's the steady, strong foundation When nothing stays the same. She's one who sheds a tear As Old Glory passes by, But couldn't give an answer If you were to ask her why. Throughout the years, she marches on Through tears and joy and strife. She's America's unsung hero- She's a military wife. As we continue to do our duty here, I want to say thanks to all the spouses back home that continue to carry the load we once shared. I know it is hard. I do know that the time we spend apart will make the reunion much sweeter.
