Snow Crash Neal Stephenson did a great job predicting and in some ways paroding a future involving virtual reality. Chronicling the adventures of a fellow named Hiro Protagonist, this book still reads fresh even though in many ways the future it talks about is now. Adult.

The Diamond Age Another Stephenson romp but this time with a prominent female character with a Victorian throwback society isolated amid a futuristic world gone mad. I found the ending to be a bit bizarre but I include this book because it is so genuinely intriguing as a whole and because it left a haunting impression in my mind. Adult.

Dragonflight This is the first in the Dragon Riders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. Fascinating both for the world and for the characters. Young Adult and up.

Pawn of Prophecy David Eddings begins his epic series with this book. I found this series to be a fast, enjoyable read and I can still see the characters in my mind's eye. Young Adult and up.

Lucifer's Hammer Ignore the ugly cover. This is by far the best of the apocalpytic novels. A comet crashes into earth and threatens man kind. Minute realistic details help give a true to life feel to this incredible tale that will leave you going "Wow". Larry Niven also authored Destiny's Road in which I happen to have a very, very, small part in as a minor, minor, character (sorry folks, can't tell ya which one, she's named after my real life name). Adult.

A Wrinkle in Time Captivating, moving and even thought provoking science fiction/fantasy novel about an ordinary girl and her brother who set out to rescue their dad. This book and the next two of which I truly consider to be in this series (there is a fourth but it was written long after the first 3 and is not up to par with the first 3) is was one of the most influential novels of my young reading life. Young Adult.

Nine Princes in Amber The first of Roger Zelazny's Amber series. Reminescent of various mythologies, Zelazny create's his own family of "gods".
