Ender's Game After many years of reading science fiction, this was the first book to truly impress me once again in this genre. It is a "can't put it down tale" of a young prodigy who is sent to the Academy - a harsh place realistically depicting the complex world of child interactions - and his eventual leadership of the earth to victory. The following two books are worthy successors though each has it's own flavor: Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide . Young adult but really all ages. A boxed set of the three is available for pre-order as well: Orson Scott Card : Beyond Ender's Game. |

The Chronicles of Narnia Boxed Set This series absolutely swept me away as a child, I read the last book with both exhilerationa and sadness that I knew it was ending. You can read it still and get a similar experience. Children of all ages. |
Travels If you've read other Chrichton books, be prepared for something different. Set up as a collection of stories experienced by the author. Adult. |
Watership Down A "children's" book about death and rabbits. I found this profoundly moving and mystical. Young Adult and older. |
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh Who knew I would care so much about the plight of rats? Well you might to if you got caught up in this adventure tale. Children/Young Adult. |
Brightness Falls from the Air This author, though little known to even readers of the science fiction genre, wrote one of my all time favorite short stories, which has sometimes gone by the name of "Green, Go" I believe (I'll have to check that when I re-arrange these books). A dark book set on a world far away where a mystery must be solved. Science Fiction. |

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings... The Classic and definitive fantasy set. J.R.R. Tolkien created not only a literary marvel but an entire world complete with history and linguistically perfect languages for its inhabitants. While these books are billed as young adult and older, I first read them at the age of 8 and was transported even then by the epic story. Fantasy The Lord of the Rings (Collector's Edition) |
