Because video gaming hasn't exactly
made history yet, there isn't a whole lot
in terms of books. Most of the
information is only documented on web
sites or the occasional "interview" with
gamers who supported in industry from
the beginning.
I was rather surprised that there had
been organized tournaments early in
the history of games. I didn't know how
successful Quake really had been. I
only remember being part of the DOOM
revolution and being very active in the
Starcraft community early on.
The Red Annihilation Tournament of '97
probably had one of the best prizes to
offer, a 1987 Ferrari Convertible. I
wonder why Carmack insisted on giving
away such a toy to a group of crazed
video gamers. I guess if you had a hand
in developing DOOM and Quake you'd
be off your rocker too.
Although we did not show a video of it,
Starcraft in South Korea might as well
be Football for us. Here is an
embedded video of a "playoff".
Its always those asians.
