DJ Babey
Drew

"I want to get $50,
000 a show just like Flex."
Born
and raised in Queens NY. BabeyDrew has always appreciated music. With his
West Indian background, his first love of music was reggae. He began
spinning reggae at the age of 12. As he grew older, he diversified his
skills to also play Hip Hop and R&B. At a young age, BabeyDrew spent a
lot of time in recording studios, which led to a new talent in sound
recording. Arriving at Hampton University in 1998 was a milestone in
BabeyDrew's life. He immediately began working with WHOV 88.1 FM, the
number one college radio station in the USA.
He held down his own time slot, and
mix show on Saturdays from 7-10PM with an audience up to 55,000. During
his matriculation at Hampton University, he began doing production for the
station on a regular basis. BabeyDrew did not only stick to radio, but
continued to "rock" parties on campus, and at local clubs.
BabeyDrew
is not only known locally, but is known in many colleges and universities
around the country.
He recently
launched his “BabeyDrew college tour” in which he toured colleges
across the country. “I needed a marketing strategy, and I thought a
college tour was great.” Being in a flooded DJ market, Drew decided it
was time to do something different. He went under the management of Mista
Nice his sophomore year in college. This led to a release of his first CD
"Back to the Streets", which is still circulating shops from
Virginia to New York. His latest project is the "Back to School"
series…
His
long-term goals are to be as successful as Funkmaster Flex. “He is the
most paid DJ in the industry.
Funkmaster Flex
really opened the opportunities for DJ’s by having people look at us as
artists, and not just someone playing records, 'cause there is an art to
DJ-ing. I want to get $50, 000 a show just like Flex.”
Some DJ’s that
BabeyDrew was influenced by was Funkmaster Flex, DJ Revolution, Spinbad,
DJ Bee, and DJ Mista Nice. “Growing up in NY, all I had to listen to on
the radio is Funkmaster Flex, so of course I started to mix like him.”
BabeyDrew
continues rocking the club scene in VA.
“If I go back
to NY, I have to start from scratch. I might as well stay where I have a
name and make some money.”
