Background History

Like all young Trill, Jaiyna underwent the usual screening procedure for potential symbiont hosts. The results declared her to be an exceptional candidate and advised her immediate admission into the training program. However, Jaiyna could not warm to the idea of having to share her body with another being and having her personality altered by the merging of host and symbiont, so she ultimately declined the proposition. Her whole family was dismayed - both parents and most other relatives are joined and very proud of the family tradition of producing "strong" hosts. They urged her to reconsider,
but Jaiyna remained strong in her own beliefs.

From an early age, Jaiyna displayed a strong interest for the medical sciences, not least because of her fascination with the Trill host/symbiont relationship (an interest not in the least hampered by her unwillingness to experience the sensations herself). She began studying medicine at Trill University at the age of 18. She kept receiving regular invitations from the Trill Symbiosis Commission, continually urging her to apply for the host training program. The Commission even went so far as to contact her family to try and sway her.

Realizing that her parents would not give up trying to convince her of the "merits of being joined" as long as she stayed close to them, Jaiyna decided to leave the Trill homeworld and seek her destiny elsewhere. After completing her third year of medical training, she transferred to the medical branch of the Vulcan Science Academy. Two years later she applied for and was granted an internship at San Francisco Interstellar Hospital on Earth. The hospital was located close to the Starfleet Academy grounds and there was an active exchange of staff and students with Starfleet Medical School. Jaiyna participated in a number of joint research projects and became more and more attracted to the idea of serving in Starfleet which appealed to her because of the multitude of races that work together.

After earning her doctorate at the end of her internship, Jaiyna applied to Starfleet Academy and was accepted. Since she was already a fully certified doctor, she did not have to attend Starfleet Medical School and just needed to complete a few extra courses in Exobiology and Xenobiology to be certified as a fleet physician.

NOTE: During her years living among other species Jaiyna quickly learned that most non-Trills automatically assume that every Trill they meet is joined, even though according to official records only a small fraction of the Trill population make suitable hosts. At one point during her youth, after deciding that she would *never* want to be joined, no matter how suitable a host she might make, Jaiyna decided to drop her family name and only use her first name from then on, to make a point that she is a single and independent being. Still, many people just don't get the hint, and she has given up arguing the point in situations when it serves no purpose.
