June 2008

"Monkey: Journey to the West" at Spoleto was great! It was well worth the trip to Charleston, South Carolina. I arrived early afternoon and went to King Street where I found a small salon to reinvigorate myself before preview night that evening. The cute hairdresser with the Native American name lamented how she wanted to go see the show, but how it was out of her budget. I promised to relay that to you. The Charleston Rickshaw Company came to pick me up to take me to the B&B. The biker was an affable dude who even came back to pick me up to take me to the Sottile Theatre at the College of Charleston. I decided to dress up in my black Chinese brocade jacket and long velvet skirt and had my rollaway case with valuables for safekeeping.

The first-row nosebleed section right smack in the middle was more than I could have asked for. The orchestra was in full view. The actors were right in our collective faces (but in a good way, mind you). ;) The audience was totally up for the show that night and sizzled with a sense of awed appreciation for what they were witnessing, hearing and experiencing. I loved how the music was so you with the pure, melancholic, joyous and meditative energy touching our very soul. It went perfectly with the dialogue, stage scenery and props, acting, acrobatics, martial arts and overall performance.

What a treat it was to see you in the audience at the end of the show and having been able to talk with you again. There was so much more that I wanted to say and so much more that I wanted to hear from you about, but, alas, in the presence of the gentleman next to you who urged me to return every night, I found myself morphing into my shy and hesitant avatar. "Did you like it?" you asked to which I replied "I loved it." I also thanked you for always making such beautiful music. Your expression then was priceless and one which has been etched in my heart. Cross my heart. :)

Gratefully,
frances

P.S. Will be writing a review to follow-up.
