dear damon

August 2008

d, seems like this letter finds you in good spirits this August. I saw your picture with a fan when you were on your way back from shopping and it was cute to see you were wearing the Gorillaz Pink Rabbit T. It's so good to see you doing so well these days despite all the flurry of activities that you find yourself part of. Looking forward to the Monkey record coming out.

Honest Jon's Chop Up at Lincoln Center was brilliant! It was a great day, overall, despite having to drive Grapey for numerous hours in the sweltering heat with an inoperable a/c. The drive even set the stage for the show. :P The symposium was great fun. Can you imagine, that Afro.pop dude winked at me?! The cheek! Naah, but seriously, hearing about your travels to Mali to record Mali Music from Alan was quite fascinating in how everything about the recording process seemed very impromptu and spontaneous. It was nice to see you quietly in attendance in the left rear of the Kaplan Penthouse and even nicer when you got on the same elevator. It was good to see you again. "It hasn't been that long, has it?" you asked. No, but I could see you every day and it would be good to see you.

The performance was exquisite. All the performers were top-notch and most excellently authentic people, to boot. I decided to do something I had never done previously and await everyone at the backstage door so I could take photographs of these artists. Those of us who were there were treated to some instant music. It was so special. Finally you came out at about 11:15 pm and all the nice boys and girls who were awaiting your exit swarmed towards you like bees to honey. The bloke with the melodica wanted you to sign his melodica. Not only did you, but you played it for us all before doing that. What a dude, you are! :D More autographs and pictures followed. Though I did tell you that that photo that Jamie took of us was "strange," it is still a cute picture, I think now. Guess what, though? That picture that was taken on July 12th is beautiful. It has been put away under lock and key and will never be seen by anyone else. I will show you, though, and you will see how sweet it is.

Am off to Beijing in a few hours, d. Speaking of which, I love that BBC Olympics short. :D Will be at the Opening Ceremonies, Water Polo, Beach Volleyball, Tennis and Basketball Competitions. No table tennis. :P I feel better about going to the Great Wall now, too, when I learned that you walked roughly 48 km on that wall?! Amazing. I'm glad you were found, though, but what a story. Stay safe, cool, happy and healthy, d. Have a great month!

Contently,
frances

P.S. Still owe you a review for Monkey and the Honest Jon's Chop Up at Lincoln Center. Should be able to write them up after mid-August and will put them up in the gig report section here. Cheers for your understanding.
