January 1999
The New Year begins with a de'ja` vu blur song which is beautifully blurry, yet Beatles-esque. The blur song is "Young and Lovely," which I felt was a Beatles collage of a song. The song begins in a dream-like state, echoes and all, which makes you wonder if you're really here or whether you're dreaming. The reference to Friday's Child first of all reminded me of "Monday's Child" who appears in the Beatles' "Lady Madonna." This blurry slow portion of "Young and Lovely" melodically and effect-wise (i.e. echo) reminded me of John's languid singing in "A Day in the Life."The guitar bit evoked "Day Tripper." As soon as the chorus portion begins with a "you can get what you want, so young and lovely..."the beat seemed like a slower version of the keyboard in "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." The lyrics, though , are uniquely damon and are far more inscrutable than the lyrics for "A Day in the Life" or "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La- Da"
There might be many more portions that remind you of Beatles songs. As for me, I'm still on this never-ending quest to find all the pieces to this musical jigsaw puzzle.
