Name that Tune!
Did a blur song ever remind you of another song?
October 1999
This month's song is a non-blur song that reminded me of a blur song, but you could also say the opposite if you knew the non-blur song before you've ever listened to the blur song (know
what I mean?) That non-blur song is Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne."
Even those who might not know this song might correctly guess
that the song title, first of all, reminds them of, you guessed
it, "Ernold Same!" The two songs' titles are strikingly similar.
They're both songs about men who might be catagorized as leading
hum-drum lives to a certain extent (though in Arnold's case, it
ends up not being so hum-drum). Both men look at themselves
regularly in their mirrors. Arnold notices his baby blues (like
damon?), whilst Ernold makes the same frown time and again.
Arnold's life is not supposed to be the same (though it is, until
the end of the song) and Ernold's "world stays the same." There
is reference to Arnold being a "nasty sort of person," while
Ernold sits in "the same seat with the same nasty stain."
"Oh Arnold Layne" and "Oh Ernold Same" sound almost like mistaken
echoes of the same song. Though Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne"
is faster as a song, it shares the same ambiance as "Ernold Same." Arnold Layne and Ernold Same could be the same man
(ala "A Separate Peace"). Hhmm...

P.S. Cheers to Miss Miyuki Kuronuma of Blurdate fame for sending me a tape with some songs from Pink Floyd's "Relics," without which this month's "Name that Tune!" wouldn't have been possible.
