First and second week of March 1999
"Hermann Hesse was the first writer who actually had any effect on me. All his books seemed totally at odds with the 20th Century, he never had any pretence of trying to be a futurist, there was never an agenda. All his books were good, but I suppose the key ones were "Steppenwolf" and "Siddhartha." He was always trying to define a spirituality but at the same time he stayed clear of any sex or dogma. He was just there. One of the first urban pagans."
-damon 1993
Hermann Hesse is the must-read German writer who beckons to all bibliophiles who are on a search for self-discovery. Not pretentious at all, as damon rightly pointed out, but a profoundly spiritual man who displayed his enormous depth in thinking that provokes each and every reader of his works to go in deeper and in doing so, discover oneself and why we feel we are here on this earth as the people that we are. The man is a storyteller-extraordinaire and that is what makes us keep coming back to his works. He's like a literary Guru and we, his devotees. He lived for the moment and was open to various conflicting diverse ideas. This guy was cool!

Anyone up for a game of the Glass Bead Game?
I'm sure many of you have already read Hesse and have been transformed as a result. For those of you who haven't, WHADDYA WAITING FOR?!Start with "Steppenwolf" if you want to start light; go for "The Glass Bead Game" if you're the "Dungeons and Dragons" type. Either way, you can't go wrong. The guy moved me to such an extent that I swore I'd study German in college (and I did, it was my minor). damon's a deeply spiritual being as we all know, and Hesse was probably a great influence on him. Think about damon and the man that he is today and the man that he will be in the future, and see if Hesse can provide you with some insight into damon, as well as into you, yourself.
