How damon's thirst for knowledge can lead to our edification...

First and second week of November 1999

"After classical music, I got into Motown. It's a wonderful period of music. I even love the Jacksons. And Anita Baker. And even Mica Paris. I love black music and I don't get to listen to enough of it. It's terrible how the rock establishment's xenophobic racist values don't allow these reference points. You're not meant to mention black music. It's disgusting that you never hear anyone praising anyone other than the Stones and Bowie and Ray Davies."

-damon (Melody Maker, June 12, 1993)

damon's favourite Marvin Gaye song is apparently "Sexual Healing." Anita Baker's a sultry diva in her own right, and the Jacksons must appeal to his love of "poppy" songs. The thing about the Motown sound is it's sultriness and pressure-cooker slow-cooked hhmm-hhmm-good vibe that gets you in the mood for the type of healing about which Marvin sang so longingly. Graham once said that damon's about as sexy as a "limp fish" or something or rather, but those words couldn't be further from the truth, right damon?
