Entertain Me!
BRITGIRL in London
For a change of pace, BRITGIRL shares with you a snapshot of one of her visits to London. It's nothing to write home about, but gives you an idea of what she is up to during her visits to London when she attends a blur gig.
December 7, 1997 Sunday 9:38 am
I am now sitting in a coffee shop/pub named the Dome in Earl's Court. Just left my suitcase at the Hotel as it's too early to check in (check-out lodgers checking out at 11 am). It is a hotel owned by Sikhs, the familiar smell of Indian spices welcomes me as I arrive at the hotel reserved by the Heathrow hotel reservations' desk. I had wanted to stay at the A House (name purposefully disguised), but it was fully booked. Took the tube, first the Picadilly line, then the District, as major renovations are underway. I wonder whether I should take a picture with my disposable camera of myself riding the tube, but decide against that as I look horrid, having not slept so well on the way here, and also because a young Japanese man had beaten me to the punch by taking his own satisfied-looking mugshot.
Was going to order scrambled eggs, bacon and toast, English breakfast tea, and a bottle of still mineral water, but ditched the bacon in favor of the smoked salmon. Yum! Over twelve hours had elapsed since I had last eaten. In-flight food sucks!
A man hit his left knee against my right armrest and fainted flat onto his back right next to me...what the?! Thought he was a goner until the inflight "doctor" revived him. Do these incidents mean anything?
Will stop by the fax place nearby and fax the hotel name and address to my travel agent so the blur ticket can be delivered to the hotel. Yay!
Now going to plan for today's events...what to do...where to go...consulting Time Out and Fromm's guide. Tobacco inescapable! Yuck! Makes vegging out in these cafe's a nuisance. Go to Camden for Sunday market...Hyde Park Corner for kid bro's Hard Rock t-shirt collection addition...go to Charing Cross...see Downing Street...Trafalgar Square...Parliament Square...and Westminster Abbey? Will I be up for all this? Perhaps not...Brunch came to 7 pounds 60 pence plus tip.
Before returning to the hotel, sent agent the info. Room finally ready at 12:30 pm. Have to lie down and sleep before heading out. Sleep until 2:30pm or so. Wake up, shower, dress and out to take the bus. Get on the #74 and head down Cromwell Road, then Kensington Avenue, Knightsbridge and Park Lane to Marble Arch. Get on and off repeatedly and walk kilometers upon kilometers...first to the HRC, then to the loo at the Intercontinental, then to Harrods for mum's gift. Was overwhelmed by the maddening crowd there! Then wandered around Marble Arch and got a Kangol cap for self, went to Virgin, bought CDs and books, then went to Boots for toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo and film (never take, always buy locally, leave behind...)
Had Tagliatelle Arrabiata, mixed salad and Minestrone soup at the Pizzeria Romana in South Kensington, was okay, though the Arrabiata was super spicy, which was nice.
It's sprinkling a bit now and the whole day was grey and dreary, but it's great to be here for the blur gig! Feel pretty relaxed, but pooped (knackered) at day's end...sleep like a Rip Van Winkle. Tomorrow's another day...
