BRITGIRL in London

For a change of pace, BRITGIRL shares with you a snapshot of one of her visits to London. It's nothing to write home about, but gives you an idea of what she is up to during her visits to London when she attends a blur gig.

December 8, 1997 Monday

Definitely more energetic today. Woke up at 11:45 am, which is the reason why, I think. Went to bed at around 10:00 pm last night.

Came to Cannon Street to visit the Globe Theatre and joined the 1:15 pm tour which just ended at 1:45. Now in the Globe Cafe' for brunch (don't really feel like eating the full English breakfast at the b&b) and order a cream of broccoli soup and the Globe sandwich (Cheddar and apple chutney) and two fresh O.Js. Felt faint before coming here, but now feel rejuvenated, having gone through the tour. Felt my theatre blood start pumping as I steeped myself in that ambience. There's a trap door on stage (which serves as the grave being dug in Hamlet, for example), when that play is performed here.

The signs of the zodiac are depicted on the inner ceiling of the stage roof The two large pillars at the front of the stage are single trunks of oak covered with gold leaf and painted over to look like marble. The stage is made of wooden planks and there are small holes through which the actors backstage can see what is going on on stage. There is room around the stage on the ground level for a standing room audience of 500 people. There is room at the rear of the stage for an audience of about 6 people. These seats used to be reserved for members of the aristocracy, who sat there more to be viewed, that to view. The thachet roof around the theatre is the only one of its kind in London and has fire extinguishing watersprinklers atop it.

In the past, people used to have bucket boys bring them buckets so that they could go to the bathroom right right. For that reason, the stench was unbearably bad. The audience weren't bathers, either, and the stench was supposedly further compounded. For this reason, there were "wind holes" set up around the theatre (from whence the word, "window" is said to have come, according to the guide).

PART II of the day's diary will be continued in May
