MOBC RACE REPORT | ||||||||||
MOBC WHITEMAN CUP 2nd of April 2000. This year's Whiteman cup was once again held in the park grounds adjacent to the popular W.A Motor Museum. In attendance where drivers from the M.O.B.C and included several visitors including local legend Ken Isbister. The two-weekend event is now a permanent fixture on the M.O.B.C racing calendar and is open to all drivers from affiliated Western Australia clubs. Not present and very disappointing was the nil representation from the Radio Rally Club and where told the race conflicted with their club day. We wondered if this could have been rescheduled, enabling all drivers to participate in this great event! Qualifying The format was four six minute heats with the total number of laps to sort positions for the finals, with the top four qualifying directly to the main twenty minute race. On the back of their nationals finals appearance both Craig and Allen looked like they would dominate the event with laps time in the low twenty seconds. On the pace too where Darren, Brian, Ken, Paul and Troy. The race circuit being grass was tight and fast with little room for error. Low ratios where the go, with most drivers selecting twelve teeth clutch bells to ensure maximum speed through the corners. By the end of round four the results showed Craig had just managed to hold Allen off for pole position with an average of eighteen laps per race! Through also where Brian and Paul Leckie coming third and fourth respectively. B FINAL The next eight drivers where placed into a ten minute "B final" with the top four progressing to the main. A few disappointed drivers unfortunately, missed the cut due to dropping racers during qualifying namely Darren and Ken. Hopefully they will have better luck next race day. As the flag dropped a frantic rush proceeded with drivers trying to take the lead. Paul Wyllie driving the Ultra Worlds had seemed to finally have his car set up and was lapping well above the remaining field. The race finished with Paul first and Greg second allowing them to proceed to the A final. A FINAL After a short delay racing we moved onto the main race of the day. A twenty-minute race would offer plenty of enjoyment for spectators and drivers alike and with the field very close we would be assured of a hotly contested race. Once again Paul driving the Ultra Worlds using H.N101 tyres and his perfectly tuned Italian Cipola leaped to the lead which he would ultimately keep to the end. The other drivers desperately trying to hold each other off for positions could not match the speed of Paul's car. Several laps into the race and trouble once again would strike Craig as the EB4 although very fast during qualifying proved the old saying "You Must Finish First, To Be First To Finish". With Craig out of contention Allen and Brian constantly swapped positions and with Greg not too far behind putting in a personal best race, well done Greg. As the race finished a great result for the new Ultra Worlds II with a 1st, 2nd and 5th. With points still available next race meeting it is still possible to race, have a great time and possible pick up a prize so come on down. |
