DETECTIVE DECATHLON - MAY 5, 2001FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)![]()
The Detective Decathlon is a unique, weekend-long training event which challenges its participants both mentally and physically in a variety of situations. The Decathlon brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement officers (LEOs) from all over Northern California to cooperate, compete, and push the envelope of their skills as investigators. ![]() The theme for the 2001 Detective Decathlon is "Homicide: Life On The Farm" (HLOTF). This year's event is jointly organized and sponsored by the Badge Association Research Fund (BARF) and the Stanford University Police Academy (SUPA). HLOTF is scheduled for the weekend of May 5th, 2001. NOTE: We apologize for any inconvenience this date may cause for potential attendees. Several of our guests have inflexible scheduling conflicts. The event date was chosen only after all other possibilities were exhausted. The location for HLOTF will not be announced to participants until the first week of May. ![]() Two types of police personnel are eligible: 1. All sworn LEOs who live or work in Northern California as of January 1st, 2001. LEOs who have been suspended within the last 6 months or who expect to retire within the next 3 months are not eligible. Preference will be given to detective grade investigators, but all officer ranks are encouraged to apply. 2. All full- or part-time cadets enrolled at SUPA for the 2000-2001 academic year. Cadets must be taking no fewer than 4 units of course work to be eligible. Eligible personnel must apply in TEAMS for HLOTF. Applications will be reviewed by BARF and SUPA, and a maximum of 20 teams will be invited. A number of slots will be reserved for cadet teams. NOTE: We regret that we cannot accept individual applications at this time, but the HLOTF format only allows for team participation. ![]() Each HLOTF team will be charged a $110.00 registration fee to cover administrative costs, equipment rental, and honoraria. NOTE: Each invited team must pay the entire registration fee when they accept their invitation to HLOTF. Applications will be available on this web site on Friday, February 23rd. If you need a hard copy of the application, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) to:
c/o Curtis Chen P.O. Box 4165 Menlo Park, CA 94026 ![]() Applications must be RECEIVED by us no later than midnight on Friday, March 16th. If you plan to submit your team application by mail, make sure you allow ample time for delivery. We will make an announcement to all applicants on March 29th. NOTE: After teams have been invited to HLOTF, we expect them to accept or decline in a timely manner. Invitations will be withdrawn if we do not receive confirmation and payment within a reasonable time frame. ![]() A "teams briefing" will be held on May 2nd. Every HLOTF team should send one representative to this briefing to receive important information on how to prepare for the weekend's activities. In addition, "warm-up" activities (also known as "pre-clues") will be posted to this web site during the month of April. We encourage teams to communicate via the HLOTF mailing list. Get to know the other teams, and challenge them! A little friendly competition never hurt anyone. ![]() Who can I contact for more information?
