Marijuana: Better Than Deadly Alcohol
How often can a commercial against drunk driving be seen on television in the course of one week? That number is always going to be larger than the number of commercials telling people not to get stoned and drive. Why would such a fact be true? Marijuana is not a dangerous drug and should therefore be legalized. Compared to cigarettes and alcohol, marijuana is not a threat to people. Marijuana can not carry guns into a school or jaywalk. Legalizing this currently-illegal drug would not unleash hell on Earth. The legalization of marijuana would have a positive effect on America.
Scott Jeffrey of Legalize.com states, "the average time served in prison for selling marijuana is four years, compared with just one year for rape or manslaughter" (Legalize 1). This means that our judicial system sees that it is much more harmless to accidentally kill a guy using a candlestick during a rousing game of Clue than to sell someone a drug that makes them eat Doritos and stare at ceiling fans. Should the money of taxpayers really be spent to incarcerate offenders of a crime that could easily be eliminated by regulating the processing of a plant? If marijuana were made legal there would be less time spent pursuing those dangerous lazy teenagers and more hours spent beating up the people who kill and rob senior citizens so they can buy more cocaine.
Most organizations that are against the legalization of marijuana attack the fact that most people in favor of the drug claim that it can be used for medicinal purposes. One source proclaims, "MARIJUANA IS NOT A MEDICINE" (Medicine 2). One should alert this author, however, that putting one's argument in caps does not make it any more credible. Let it be assumed that marijuana is not a medicine. It should still be legalized. Tobacco is not a medicine but many stores sell Marlboros. This same tobacco causes a sexy hacking cough and as an added bonus it provides its user with cancer and emphysema for no additional cost! What a bargain! All sarcasm aside, a drug that advertises the fact it gives you cancer is sold almost anywhere while marijuana, a drug that causes the munchies, has to be grown in secrecy so a policeman does not confiscate it after beating its owner repeatedly over the head with a club used to serve and protect.
Alcohol has been helping white trash husbands get drunk and beat up their wives since the beginning of time. Alcoholism has caused people to die in car accidents as well. One would think that a drug like alcohol would be taken off the market because of its unsafe properties, but it is kept legal with a poorly-enforced age restriction. Marijuana, however, has caused an increase in Funyun consumption and has provided a large demographic of Teletubbies viewers. In fact, reggae concerts would not be reggae concerts if it were not for the high amounts of marijuana filling the lungs of every person attending the show. Alcohol advocates abuse and death while marijuana supports snack food and music. Why is the dangerous one legal while the benign one is kept illegal?
Marijuana is a drug that should clearly be legalized and regulated by the government. While some drugs that are much more a health risk are distributed throughout America without so much as a second thought. If tobacco and alcohol can give Americans low birth weight and broken livers, why is marijuana not allowed to relax the American public? Marijuana should be legalized because it is much less harmful than other drugs that are already legalized.
