Experience was gained at the Asante Academy of Chinese medicine, where student practitioners would conduct the consultation, form a diagnosis and treatment strategy and treat the patient under supervision. The students would also prescribe herbs for the patients. Suzanne gained much of her clinical experience here and treated: musculo-skeletal disorders, schizophrenia, skin disorders, digestive problems, stress, insomnia, asthma among other complaints.
The pain clinic at the Whittington hospital provided student acupuncturists the chance to treat chronic pain patients, suffering from; arthritis, whiplash, sports injuries, headache, migraine and many other causes of pain. Suzanne was able to relieve pain for many patients and learned a great deal about the most efficient way to use acupuncture for pain.
During 5 months spent in China as part of the degree, students spent 4 months in Xi Yuan hospital and 1 month in the China-Japan Friendship hospital.
Xi Yuan is a Chinese medicine hospital which uses a combination of Chinese herbal therapy alongside western medicine. Suzanne gained experience in the; respiratory, cardiovascular, neurology, dermatology, gynaecology, sexual health and private wards. 3 weeks were also spent in the acupuncture ward, where she saw patients for stroke, weight loss, headache, back pain, postpartum weakness and other problems.
Suzanne spent 3 weeks at the China-Japan Friendship hospital's acupuncture wards learning some new techniques, including the Japanese abdominal acupuncture system.
After graduating with a 2:1 BSc and a BM (from Beijing university) Suzanne joined the ATCM board of Chinese medicine and opened The Garden Health Practice with colleague Graeme Waterworth in Covent Garden.
Suzanne also works for Giovanni Maciocia, reviewing, commenting and occasionally proof-reading textbooks, researching and creating Powerpoint presentations for his lectures.
