There is no proof yet that he is the son of Robert Sallis, however, he is the only possible candidate at this time. The 1850, 1860, 1885 and 1900 censuses say he was born in Alabama. He [as John Sallas] bought 319 acres of land in Gadsden Co., Fla. in 1856 & 57. This was located in the River Juction area adjacent to his father-in-law. In 1884 he owned about 120 acres of land. That year he spent about $15 on building and replacing fences on his land. He claimed he spent about $40 on ferterlizer. He and his sons appear to have been very successfil farmers. The estimated value of all farm productions that they "sold, consumed, or had on hand" was estimated at $400. They made 50 pounds of butter, slaughtered one beef and made 180 gallons of molasses. On 8 acres they grew 100 bushels of corn. On 5 acres they grew 50 bushels of oats. They grew 4 bales of cotton on 12 acres. On one acre they produced 100 bushels of potatoes. They also had apple and peach trees as well as grape vines from which they made 60 gallons of wine.
When the census was taken in 1900 he was enumerated in the household of his son William "Willie" in Decatur Co., Georgia.

There is no proof he is the son of William and Rebecca, but they seem to be one possibility. William Hurtzig suggests they may be the parents. Also, family tales in Phillips Co., Arkansas was that there was a kinship between the Sallis and Langston families. When Thomas M. Jr. and his 2nd wife died (by 1903) their two children, Cayce and Neoma, were raised by Jesse Langston (her half brother.) Also, Rebecca (Holder) Sallis, Thomas Sr.'s grandmother, was a Langston.
In 1850 he was a farmer. In 1860 he was working as a "grocer's clerk" in Pike Co., Alabama. He is probably the T.M. Sallis who served in the 7th Regiment, Alabama Cavalry, in the Civil War.
