320. John Benjamin "Ben" Sallas 1, 2, 3 (John A. , Etheldred 'Dred' , John , John ) was born 4, 5, 6 about 1845 in Georgia. He died 7 in 1910/1920 in Walton Co., Florida. John was counted in a census in 1880 in Rose Hill, Covington Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 8 in 1910 in Ealum, Walton Co., Florida.

When the 1880 census was taken in Covington Co., Ala., he was a farmer living at Rose Hill. He homesteaded 159.64 acres of land in Covington County, northwest of the town of Gantt. His post office at the time he filed the papers was Oaky Streak, Ala. In his testimony he stated that he had first moved onto the property in May 1884 and built a house. He had later built a smoke house, corn crib, and a stable. The buildings were valued at $200. The land was described as "ordinary pine agricultural lands" of which 5-20 acres were in cultivation. When asked "of whom does your family consist?" he answered "myself, my wife and three children." The three elder children had apparently died before he filed these papers. The patent was issued on 23 Nov 1891.
An article in the "Holmes County Advertiser," a newspaper published at Bonifay, Fla., on 26 Feb 1910 says: "KILLS SON-IN-LAW: Ben Sallas, a respectable white citizen of Walton County residing near Ealum, shot and killed his son-in-law, W.F. Mixon, last Monday night. Sallas heard a noise under his house and upon investigation found a man hiding there. After calling to him several times to come out and make himself known, which was unheeded and instead began crawling away, Sallas fired at the retreating [ ] and the entire load took effect, killing the supposed burglar instantly. Upon investigation Sallas found he had killed his son-in-law. For what purpose the man was under the house remains a mystery. Sallas gave himself up to the sheriff immediately." He was ordered held for the Grand Jury.
It is possible that Ben's daughter, Urilla, and Wesley Mixon were separated and she was already living back home with her parents. She and her children were living there when the census was taken later that year.

John married 1 Mary Jane about 1867. Mary was born 2 in 1847 in Alabama. She died after 1930 in . She was buried in . Mary was counted in a census 3 in 1930 in Westover, Covington Co., Alabama.

The reason she was living there is not known but she was living only a few miles from her brother, Benjamin. Celia never married and the father of her son is unknown to the current generation. Some of the older ones say he was known to her older grandchildren. Mae is the only one of them still alive and can't remember his name when asked. She did say he was a school teacher but that hasn't been confirmed. She is probably buried in the Memphis Baptist Church cemetery at Dothan.
