In 1709 the Schweitzer family fled the religious persecution and wars that had plagued the Rhine valley. They and other German refugee families were placed on the Thomas Southwell estate at Rathkeale near Limerick, Ireland by the British and Irish Parliaments. After the lease period ended many of the young descendants left for North America. 1(Forty passengers in the ship "Pery" under Captain Hogan sailing from Balingrane, Ireland to New York, NY, arriving August, 1760. Among the passengers were Ruckle, Embury, Switzer and Lorentz(Lawrence)). Margaret (Switzer) Embury was one of the 1760 group.
A portion of the Switzer lineage originated in south west Germany, then spent fifty years in Ireland before appearing in North America.
Margaret's first husband Philip Embury was one of the founders of the Methodist church in North America before he died in 1773. She married John Lawrence in 1775. They were Loyalists and moved to Montreal during the American Revolution, then settled near Prescott, Ontario.
